I work for the Contractor’s Board. One of our Board members was in the road boring business. He had 70 or so workers in August. He has 20 now. All of the skilled workforce is spread to the four winds. And, contractors, have been going to the shelters and offering to hire and transport unskilled workers for clean-up and debris removal - and getting no takers.

That appears to be one of the unwanted side effects of the welfare state. It’s a crying shame.

How sad! From what I hear, the pay would be very good right now, too. There are some good opportunities.

Popeyes is offering something above $8/hour as well as a signing bonus for those who sign on full-time ($6,000) or part-time ($3,000) for a year. I’m sure contractors are getting well-paid with lots of opportunity for OT - workers are in demand.

Burger King is offering the same kind of bonuses for workers who are willing to commit to working for a year in NO. I had to generate statistics at my office this pm. Our workload at the Contractors Board has tripled since the storms.
