Oldest priest in the Pittsburgh diocese, associate of John L. Lewis and Martin Luther King, he marched in every labor struggle and every strike in Pittsburgh,

“He was the most important Catholic social activist in 20th-century Pittsburgh,” Charles McCollester, a labor relations professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, said in 2004, (from Fr. Rice’s obit linked above).

As a pro-laborite and pro-unionist, I can only say, “What a man!” And I hope that there will be others in his cast in this era when unions and working men and women are so scorned.
