I go to college in a very tiny, super Baptist area. The Catholic Churches are kind of far and there are 0 Catholic campus ministries nearby. Fortunately I’ve found someone to help me get to Mass, but I was so sad to see that there were no other people my age or from school in the parish. I really want to convert, but it is difficult to do that when it feels like there aren’t any Catholics I can fellowship with on campus. I want to try to start a ministry, but I’m not sure how I could do that, I’m barely even a catchumen. What do I do?

Think in terms of a small group. Will the college let you post a flier? Start with conversation, prayer, Bible study, sitting around casually. There are probably others who are in your situation or just curious about Catholicism. I’m happy you found someone to take you to Mass. Get started by contacting the Priest about RCIA.

I see fliers for other campus ministries around, so they could most likely allow me to do so as well. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that!

Thank you so much!

You might want to contact your diocese. In theory there should be someone looking out for Catholics on campus. Perhaps they don’t do a good job of advertising or letting people know they exist. You could be a great asset to them! The diocese should be able to put you in touch with the right folks.

My suggestion, take small steps. It would be difficult to start a group sharing fellowship in the Church, when you yourself are not yet Catholic. First small step, follow your heart, join an RCIA group, enter the church, then go from there. One step at a time.

Do you know of a possible college or university nearby that has a Newman Center? They are to help college kids remain close to their Catholic faith and
might have an RCIA class.

I think that’s a good idea, maybe I’m too excited. Thank you!

The closest one is 2 hours away and I’m super jealous because apparently a lot of people enjoy this particular center’s priest.

Yes it would be nice to have somebody looking out for Catholic students. There really isn’t a lot of advertisement because the town is so tiny and it goes unnoticed. Thank you!

Contact your Diocese. They will have a list of Campus Ministries and also be able to advise about starting one!

The Newman Centers, Varsity Catholic and FOCUS are also resources.
