Ladies, is your husband getting crankier as he gets older?

My husband and I are still in the young category - but my DAD is getting crankier. My mom and I say he is turning into his father. (Who we used to lovingly call ‘Mr Grinch’.)

I’ve definitely noticed a change in my husband in the past few years (he’s turning 45 next month). When he was younger, he wanted a dozen kids and had all the patience in the world. I’ve always been crabby and impatient. In the past few years, I’ve noticed my husband doesn’t have nearly the patience that he used to with the chaos of a houseful of kids.

He’s still worlds more patient than I am. And he is not crabby with ME, just with chaos. I guess that’s why we are biologically programmed to have children when we are younger. I think as we get older, tolerance for confusion and chaos tends to decrease.

We have a name for it in our house…we’ll say…“honey, what’s your crab-o-meter reading today?” 😛

This reminds me of the Father Corapi episode where he says of an older lady “she had reached the age where she just didn’t care anymore (about what people thought).”

As people get older, I tend to see them not sugar coating things as much as when they were younger.

I don’t know if it’s crankiness, or tell it like it is and I don’t have time for games…

I am optimistic–my husband is getting less cranky rather than more as he ages–I’m 54, he’s 60. However, my 87-year-old stepfather is getting crankier by the day, but my mother copes well. He is getting progressively forgetful, too, but that’s another issue.😦

Yes, definitely. He is 45, struggles with depression and his poor job situation in this economy, and is definitely crankier than when I married him.

He does not mean to, but he takes out his anger and frustration via yelling when he is home. He recognizes that his anger at his job situation is not our fault and then feels guilty about yelling and the kids and me, so he leaves and spends less time at home. It is a vicious circle.
Here also. My hubby (47) has a job, but struggles with health issues and feeling old before his time. He is grumpy most of the time, and it is a real, true problem. His relationship with our 12 yo son is in the sewer, but he can’t see how he is contributing. Sigh…😦

*I think there is a difference between on and off gumpiness, which we all feel from time to time, and depression. If grumpiness is started to negatively affect children, family life, etc…on a frequent basis, I would try to get to where it’s stemming from, and if the person might need to get a physical, and be examined for something more serious. Just my two cents. *

I agree wholeheartedly about figuring out what’s going on, but one can’t force their spouse to change. The doctor says that hubby isn’t depressed enough to need medication, and hubby is not a very good patient - won’t use the machine for sleep apnea, etc etc etc etc. So he is very tired most of the time, can sleep 12+ hours a day easily. I won’t go into everything, just to say that by no means have issues not been looked at, just at they aren’t being resolved.

*Oohhh…you know what? Being tired makes me horribly crabby!!! I need mucho sleep. 😃 I’m sorry your husband has sleep apnea…oh, that is hard. I bet a lot of his grumpiness stems from that…I’m not a doctor, I’m just guessing, but lack of sleep regularly can render someone very grouchy. I pray for things to get better, Lorax. :hug1: *

I remember hearing or reading somewhere that there are changes which take place in a man’s brain as he ages, causing him to get grumpier as he gets on in years. Do you think it’s true?
Hi there Tenebrae, I have read about that too…And I know several “grumpy” men but I am not sure it’s because of the age thing, maybe they are just grumpy…I don’t know but this is interesting…Lately I have noticed my father getting a bit short fused but maybe it’s all the things he has had to endure that may have hardened his character?

All I know is that I know many women whom have gotten grumpier as they have aged too…So not sure how all that stuff really works!!! lol
