Can another hymn be substituted for the Lamb of God? My son said his parish sings Power of Love in place of the Lamb of God before communion. They end up the last refrain singing the words ‘Lamb of God’ but then sing something else besides ‘grant us peace’. I couldn’t find anything in the GIRM on this - perhaps I looked in the wrong place.

No this cannot be substituted. It must be exactly as it is in the Sacramentary.

Paragraph #366, General Instruction for the Roman Missal:

“It is not permitted to substitute for the chants found in the Order of Mass, e.g., at the Agnus Dei”

Roma locuta est, causa finita est.

What song is this? The only Power of Love I know was performed by Huey Lewis in the Movie Back to the Future. I can’t see this being sung during Mass.

I don’t know if the name of it is Power of Love, but it is a touchy feely ditty they’ve been doing at this Newman Center for several years. The whole congregation sings it with heartfelt devotion which is touching. Of course that doesn’t make it right.

I told my son about paragraph #366 in the GIRM.

They also don’t kneel after the Sanctus but wait until the moment of consecration. I told my son about the book Mass Confusion. If he reads it, however, he may turn in to a liturgically correct freak like his mother.

I can’t imagine *anyone *singing anything by Huey Lewis.

Good luck getting this changed. Even though GIRM #366 specifically mentions the Agnus Dei as a chant not to be altered during Mass, the USCCB approved so-called “tropes” of the Lamb of God in their out-dated document (1982) on church music called *Liturgical Music Today (*para. 20).

When I confronted my pastor, he stated that it was approved by our bishop. When I confronted my bishop, I received a letter from the diocesan Office of Worship, that stated it was up to each pastor to decide whether or not to alter the Agnus Dei “according to circumstances.” The only reference given was Liturgical Music Today, and an article in the BCL’s newsletter from a couple of years ago that quotes LMT.

In the end, if they’re gonna do it, they’re gonna do it.

From the Adoremus article, “Worthy is the Lamb,” by Susan Benofy (Online Edition - Vol. VIII, No. 9: December 2002 - January 2003, http://www.adoremus.org/1202AgnusDei.html)] :
"In June of 1995 the US bishops, as part of their vote on ICEL’s proposed revision of the Sacramentary (ICEL’s term for the Mass prayers), approved a set of “ecumenical texts” composed by the International Consultation on English Texts (ICET), an ecumenical group in which some ICEL translators participated. These “ecumenical texts” included translations of the prayers of the Ordinary of the Mass: the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei.
The ICET Agnus Dei uses alternate invocations: “Jesus, Lamb of God: Have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins: Have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world: Give us your peace”.
Though these proposed texts were approved by the US Bishops, the ICEL Sacramentary revision, including these texts, was rejected by the Holy See." (emphasis added)
The disapproval by the Holy See trumps the approval by the US Bishops.

Even the deacons must kneel from the Epiclesis to the Memorial Acclamation.

The only Power of Love song I can imagine it would be is the Bob Hurd song from his In the Breaking of the Bread collection.

Power of Love,
When the light burns low let us not be cold
To a friend.

One of the last verses begins with the words “Lamb of God”. I can’t believe for a minute that Bob ever intended it to be used as a replacement for the “Lamb of God”.

I attended Mass at a neighboring parish this past weekend that used this song in place of the Lamb of God. I like the song on its own, but it did not belong in place of the Lamb of God. There were many things at this Mass that were out of compliance with the new translation.
