*** Post edited as I read the document in error. It is actually condemning the proposition. Appreciate the replies. ***

Hello brothers and sisters in Christ from Australia.

I recently came across Lamentabili Sane linked here.

I am confused with item 47. I am of the understanding that John 20:22-23 was used to support the Sacrament of Penance. Any further information on why? Thanks and God bless.

47. The words of the Lord, “Receive the Holy Spirit; whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained” (John 20:22-23), in no way refer to the Sacrament of Penance, in spite of what it pleased the Fathers of Trent to say.

Lamentabili Sane - Papal Encyclicals

I am confused with item 47. I am of the understanding that John 20:22-23 was used to support the Sacrament of Penance. Yet it clearly states he it shouldn’t. Any further information on why? Thanks and God bless.

Read what the document says, right before item #1:

“…have judged the following propositions to be condemned and proscribed.”

Since #47 (and in fact, all of those) are included in “the following propositions”, it is, as worded, condemned. That’s what the document is saying. In fact, all of those listed are condemned errors, not just #47.

Yes, this is a proposition that is being condemned, not upheld.

lol my bad. Somehow missed that. Saw it linked somewhere else without the full text. Thanks for the replies. I’ll add an edit to the original post.
