I don’t know where to put this but having read the thread about the Taqbernacle lamp in this forum I’ll place it here.

Last night as I often do I stopped by church on the way home from work to pray. I noticed a new candle in the red container near the Tabernacle-good, as the old one appeared to have burned out over the weekend. And then I noticed a candle in blue container in front of the statue of Mary and Jesus. What does this candle and color signify?

Ever since I can remember blue is associated with Mary and red with Christ. The tabernacle lamp has always been red. In our church the votive candles in front of Mary have always been blue and the ones in front of the Sacred Heart have always been red. Sort of a tradition with a little “t”.

Also you will find many candles burning in Eastern Churches. Sometimes upwards of 25 to 50 at a time usually. During different liturgical feasts which last eight days the colors of all the lamps in the main church will change from red to white to blue.
