Lansing diocese advises Catholics to skip CROP walk

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) – Diocese officials are discouraging Catholics from participating in the area’s annual CROP walk because the event’s organizing group uses part of its money on condoms to fight AIDS and other diseases in Africa.

But CROP walk officials argued that they give walkers the option of specifying that their donations go to a Catholic charity that does not support those efforts.

“We don’t think Catholics should be entangled with organizations that support activities contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church,” Michael Diebold, a spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Lansing, told The Ann Arbor News for a Saturday story.

Forgive me for possibly looking like an idiot–but what is the CROP?
 
CROP walk is a fund raising activity conducted by the Church World Services of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA. Participants raise pledges and promise to walk. Then they walk and college the pledges.

The financial support given to promote or perform abortion and the distribution of condoms by the Church Word Service represents an action inconsistent with our beliefs.

Yeah Right. That means that more will be allocated to the Culture of Perversion. Sounds just like the United Way. Maybe we should organize a protest along the route.

This is so sad. Yes, using condoms as birth control is wrong. But I think there is room to say that using condoms for disease prevention, especially fatal disease prevention, is okay.

Consider attending Sunday Mass. Its an obligation. Missing it is a sin. But if you are ill and you skip it so that you do not infect others… its acceptable.

I think folks in Rome need to look more at the issue of HIV prevention. Millions of people are dying from the disease. If we are serious about promoting a culture of life then we need to start valuing lives.
 
Condoms do not prevent the spread of AIDS. Chastity is the only prevention for AIDS and other venereal diseases. Crop Walk does provide money for contraception.Every marital act must be open to life. So if a spouse with AIDS or other incurable venereal disease really loves the other they will live continently.
Give to organizations like AId to the Church in Need or Food for the Poor.

In the poker game of life… two wrongs doesn’t make a right trumps the hypocritical oath.
 
This thread has been dormant for a considerable period. With rare exceptions, reviving threads after a protracted period of inactivity is discouraged because:
  • the issues that spurred them are often no longer “hot” or current topics, explaining why thread activity ceased originally.
  • posters originally involved in the discussion are sometimes no longer active on the forum and, therefore, unavailable to reply to comments added to the thread.
Our experience suggests that, when a topic merits revival, it is best accomplished by initiating a new thread that draws on recent events and can be posted to contemporaneously. This eliminates the baggage of folks being frustrated by asking and not receiving responses to issues raised in early posts (because the new poster didn’t notice that the post he was responding to was made a long time ago).

Posters are very welcome to open a new thread on the subject or any other topic, as well as to actively participate in the myriad active threads in the fora.
