Just curious if having large families is more of a Catholic and/or religious thing. I obviously realize that the results will be a bit biased as this is a Catholic forum, but humor me please.šŸ˜ƒ

For the sake of this poll, letā€™s consider 4 children or more as ā€œlargeā€.

Also, this poll allows for multiple choices.

OK, Iā€™ll go first. I chose options #2 and #6.

I know of several large families that are Catholic. My hubby is one of five siblings. His sister has five children. One of my hubbyā€™s coworkers has 5 children.

I also know a Muslim family that has nine children (all girls:eek: ).

Edit: the above should say my hubbyā€™s coworker has 7 children.

When I put in my 20 years in Arizona, the majority of large families were mormon.

I have four kids and am in RCIA now. I, also, know of several large families in which the parents are Protestant. There seems to be a minority movement among some Protestants to let God dictate the number of children a couple has. Recently there was a very positive documentary on a woman with 15 children. Her family was nondenominational Christians.

Thanks Deb1 and Catsrus.

Is there anyone out there who knows of a large family that is not religious? I know that many years ago before contraception was widely available and socially acceptable there were plenty of large families ā€¦but what about now? Contraception is ā€œinā€ and religion is ā€œoutā€.

I have a foul-mouthed neighbor with 7 children with 3 different men. Never married. She doesnā€™t practice Religion or birth control (but I donā€™t believe the later is for ā€œmoralā€ reasons.) There currently is no man in the house. (kids range in age from 15 to 2)

My momā€™s folks arenā€™t religious at all and they had 8 kids. My dadā€™s folks are Catholic and they had 6.

I think there are several reasons for large families these days. Including the following.

1.. Religion. I donā€™t even think that Catholics make up the majority of large families for this reason, and that is sad. I would say Muslim or Mormon would gain that honor.

2.Blended families. Dad has 2 or 3 kids from previous relationship/s, Mom has the same, put them together and presto: large, not necessarily religious, brady bunch.
  1. Immorality, bed hopping, promiscuous relationships. Luckily, many of these people let their children live and donā€™t abort them, but have numerous children with several different fathers or mothers. Also, presumably not religious.
Can anyone think of any more?

Yes, I did, but I lost touch with them a few years ago, (and perhaps theyā€™re religious by now.) They were a blended family, but they also had three children together and wanted more. (Total of 6 when I last saw them.) Neither the mom or dad came from a large family, (in fact she was from a very small divorced home.) God just must have given them the grace to open their hearts to lots of children. Their children were loved and well cared for.

I have four children and am Catholic, I know three couples in my church with 6 kids, my friend from school is Catholic and is from a family of 13 kids, my mom is Catholic and from 11 kids, but my husband is from a Lutheran family and he is youngest of 11, that always surprises people when my mom in law says she is Lutheran with 11 kids šŸ˜ƒ

I am a Catholic with 6 living children and 5 in Heaven. I attend a Latin Mass and many of the families who also attend have large families. I also know several Protestant families who decided to let God have Providence over their family size.

A frien was asked, when his wife was pregnant again, if they were Catholicsā€¦or just passionate Protestants! That was more positive than many of the comments I received, even from fellow Catholics.

Iā€™m of a different Christian branch and we have 5 children (we lost our 6th). I also know large families (much larger than ours) of both Catholic and non-Catholic backgrounds.

Iā€™d say itā€™s alot to do with lots ofā€¦

I think itā€™s mainly to do with how orthodox the family is as to whether they have a large family. If the family is heterodox, they will probably be using contraception, and vice versa. Iā€™d definitely say religious families have more children than atheist families.

Btw I am the eldest of five children over a period of six years (yes, six years LOL) and itā€™s great having a big family. The only problem is when we fall out its a HUGE bust up! :yup:

I definately believe itā€™s a religious thing. But not just a catholic thing (in fact MOST catholics I know of younger generations use artificial birth control and abortifacient ones at that)ā€¦itā€™s nice to see some that donā€™t. šŸ™‚

Children are definately a blessing of the Lord.

Actually, this could apply to me also. I did not join the Church until after the birth of our 6th, although I started RCIA while pregnant with our 4th. My dc led us to the Catholic church, but ABC was never a thought. We were quite happy having our children for their own sake - it was not a faith issue.

Now, Iā€™m Catholic raising catholic children and my dh is very supportive of this. Iā€™ve noticed many christian homeschoolers in general seem to have larger than average families.
