In Hispanic and Filipino cultures, the bride and groom are sometimes bound together with a cord while they kneel for the wedding prayer. It is a symbol of their union. The binding is done by members of the wedding party or by other honored guests. This ceremony is not part of the Catholic wedding liturgy – it is an “extra” custom, as are gestures such as the unity candle and giving flowers to Mary – and so should be cleared by the priest or deacon who will be witnessing the marriage.
