Dear, Brothers and Sisters.

My question is this; In the Extraordinary Form of the Roman rite, (1962 Editio typica) Is there A “last Blessing” given at A Requiem Mass? I remember reading an old Catechism (somewhere) that says this is not done. Because the Church does not have the same jurisdiction over the dead, as She does over the living.

Does anybody know what the rubrics say? And furthermore what is actually practiced? Also do the rubrics for the Novus Ordo, call for, or omit the Last Blessing, at A Requiem?

God Bless,
Mao

No, the Blessing is not given. The priest says “Requiescant in pace” (May they rest in peace), the Placeat Tibi, and reads the Last Gospel (which is omitted in the 1962 missal if absolution follows)

In the NO, the Mass for the Dead ends like all other Masses iwth a blessing of the people.
