Last night on TV (re: EF Mass)

There was a clue on Jeopardy about the “Tridentine Mass.”

And on some sitcom that I do not like, a man’s mother made he and his wife go to Mass on Christmas Eve, and it was so stereotypically Catholic, with Latin plainchant and a gory crucifix. Magnificent!
 
Yes, I saw Jeopardy! last evening, and IIRC, they kind of mess-up their terminology. How typical of the media. 🤷

FWLIW, I’m not particularly fond of any of the current crop of sitcoms (far too “20-something-centric” for my taste), so I don’t watch them and wouldn’t have any idea which one it might have been.

Jeopardy is one thing. But as far as sitcoms and movies go, directors always seem to want to go with traditional Catholic art, architecture and habits even when the story has to do with liberal priests and nuns.

However, Baptist film companies get it all wrong. It’s hilarious: an ambo in the middle of the sanctuary and no altar?

That was a different clue (all clues were about Mass) and the first thing I said was, “Mass is not a sacrament.”

Yeah, I guess you’re right. I must have lost focus for a minute when I ran into the kitchen. :o FWIW I said almost those exact words when I heard that too. 🙂
 
Are there any TV shows that don’t get something wrong about Catholicism?

There are a few episodes of Mad Men in which one of the characters goes to Mass, and since the show is set in the early 60s, it’s the traditional Mass. I was actually surprised at how accurate everything was, thinking, they have to screw something up. Then the characters were at the altar rail receiving communion, and were responding “amen.” That’s wrong, right? The priest did say something in Latin to each person, but it was in a whisper, so I couldn’t understand it.

Other than that though, the most accurate I’ve seen. Well, the show is known for portraying the time period very accurately. I think they take a lot of care to try and portray everything accurately.

On another show I watch, the characters go into a Baptist church and pray in front of a big crucifix. It’s supposed to be a Baptist church??? I have never seen a crucifix in a Baptist church. It’s like most shows don’t even try.

That is what was/is said when communion is given at any Tridentine Mass.

The most accurate sitcoms that I have seen for Catholic issues is actually Law and Order SVU. Detective Stabler is Catholic. In the earlier episodes he is frequently seen in Church. They even correctly included the traditional act of contrition during stablers confession and he confessed his sins in both kind and number.

Pretty good for major modern sitcom.

Right, but the priest says it, not the person receiving Communion.

I’ve seen all the SVU episodes (well, not the new ones), but that was before I was Catholic, so I don’t remember thinking too much about the Catholic stuff in them.
