Last of the prophets

It was my understanding that St.John The Baptist was the last of the prophets of God. Is there scriptural proof of this in the bible OT or NT?
 
The reason why he is considered the last OT prophet is because he was the last true prophet to minister during the Old Covenant before the New Covenant was in effect.

You make a distinction between the old and the new testament. What about various protestant groups who claim certain individuals as prophets? How can we be certain a person is a prophet from God and not a false prophet?

A prophet does not have to be theologically correct on all points. Consider Balaam. He is considered to be a prophet but he was a pagan. The validity of a prophet is based specifically on the content of his prophecies. If they are false, he is a false prophet.

A true prophet is one who speaks the truth about the word of God.
If a prophet speaks against Christ and his Church (the Catholic Church) then he/she is a false prophet (e.g. Mohammed was a false prophet).
