Were there women at the Last Supper? Listening to Fr. Pacwa on cd talking about the man carrying a water jug would indicate that he was not married and there was not any woman available to do what was traditionally their work.

The answer is simply that we don’t know. From Matthew’s Gospel we get the impression that it will be just Jesus and his disciples. Mark’s Gospel implies that it was Jesus and “the Twelve.” Luke makes it clear that Jesus “took his place at table with the apostles.” John’s Gospel has the story of the washing of the feet which is normally a woman’s job.

So, from all Scriptural indications there were no women, only Jesus and the apostles at the Last Supper. If there were others there, they are not recorded.

Thats what I told my wife you was involved n a discussion on this topic. It centered on paintings showing more that 13 people at the Last Supper. I reminded her that paintings are not scripture and should not be treated as such, most are painted hundreds of years later and are the artist impressions. I feel those who pose this are pushing for womans ordination.

While this is not Scriptural, and certainly not binding, Bl. Anne Catherine Emmerich, in her visions of the Passion related that the the pious women who attended to our Lord in his mission were also there (the upper room, that is) to celebrate the Passover. However, according to her visions, they were in a different area of the room, separated by a curtain. So, even though they were there, they did not take part in the Last Supper.

In that era, women did the serving and as was noted in the last post, were in a different area of the room. The fact of the matter is, as Deacon Ed says, we just don’t know. 🙂

Were there women at the Last Supper? We just don’t know. We do know that in that era, they did the serving. Remember Martha and Mary? So maybe there were, we just don’t know.
