Has anyone else noticed that all three major late-night show hosts are Catholic? Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, and Jimmy Kimmel.

From his name and facial features, I always just assumed Jimmy Kimmel was Jewish. But no. He’s Catholic.

The greats have all moved on — Steve Allen, Johnny Carson, and David Letterman. (And Dick Cavett’s show was very worthwhile viewing as well, to say the least.)

And I’ve always liked Jay Leno. A real man’s man. I could sit down and have a couple of beers with Jay.

I don’t watch any of them. I don’t find them funny. Johnny Carson was the last great late show comedian and I used to enjoy Dick
Cavett and Tom Snyder.

I also happened to think, after I wrote this, that the three main late-night hosts are also white males (as is everyone who has been mentioned so far).

And my father was in a car accident a few years ago similar to the one that caused Steve Allen’s death (thankfully, my father survived). I was explaining this to the young emergency room physician on duty, and I felt as though he was looking at me, thinking “who’s Steve Allen?”.

For you young folks:

I didn’t know he died from an auto accident.
Just like the great Ernie Kovacs who was another
comedian.

It said his ribs were broken and one pierced his heart. He must have bled internally slowly.

I was never really into the whole “late night host” thing. Johnny Carson was pretty much part of my childhood but I never watched him, he was for much older people. I didn’t like Letterman at all from the very start of his show. I don’t know why, I just didn’t like him, I thought he was kinds stupid. His show was like Seinfeld-type humor to me, where you take something very ordinary and it’s supposed to be hilarious and everybody else is laughing and I’m sitting there wondering what’s so funny.

Jay Leno was funny sometimes, I liked when he wrote about his father because it sounded like people in my own family. The rest of them are all interchangeable cogs to me. If I watch their shows at all, it’s because some band is playing that I happen to know somebody in.

What I notice is that they all exemplify the modern Catholic (and I’m not saying modernist so don’t flame please).

Whereas a Catholic from say the times before the First World War would indeed be Catholic first and something else second, i.e., “I’m a Catholic from Shreveport who is the town’s baker”, “I’m a Catholic from Montreal who is mother of three children”, “I’m a Catholic from Lyons, France”, “I’m a Catholic from the Midwest”, since the last 100 years or so we have seen the phenomenon of people identifying as “Catholic second” (or even third, fourth, ‘qualified’ etc).

"I’m a late-night TV host born and raised in the Heartland, currently divorced, who is Catholic, but who won’t impose ‘my’ morality on others’.
“I’m a politician from Sydney, who works hard for social justice, a practicing lawyer, love my second wife and our kids, and I’m Catholic but really disagree with a couple of outmoded teachings.”
I’m a school administrator from Ontario, father, into healthy eating, long distance running, was raised Catholic but not into all the ‘ritual stuff’. Jesus was a great social teacher but so were a lot of others. There’s room under the big tent for everybody’. …

See the difference? Catholic shows up second or even further and is almost always qualified with a 'but".

Who in the world ever said anything like this? I know you are just citing “for instances”, but people don’t usually identify themselves in this fashion, and I have to wonder if they ever did.

Carson was more relaxed. Guests came on, talked for awhile, then stayed, sitting on the couch and interacting with the next guests. Now, a guest comes on, gets five minutes, and then is out of there.

They are not perfect (who is?) but I do know that Jimmy Fallon has expressed an admiration for the Traditional Latin Mass, and Jimmy Kimmel defended his Catholic faith on his show:

The gay marriage thing is unfortunate, but gay people are darlings of the media, and the entire society has been brainwashed into thinking that whatever they do is OK.

Note: I am not a homophobe. I hate the sin and love the sinner. I have a family member who is a practicing gay man. I do not condone what he does, but I love him and I take pride in his having become a very successful businessman. I have relatives who are divorced and invalidly remarried, as well a relatives who probably practice abortifacient contraception. I don’t condone any of that either. Sodomy is an abomination, but at least it is not murder.

James Corden is British and I believe a member of the Salvation Army.

His talk show is entertaining. I usually catch snippets on YouTube.

They are “Raised Catholic” to me. That’s not the same thing as “Practicing Catholic”.
I know this because I spent a lot of time being a “Raised Catholic” or a “Semi-Practicing Catholic” before reverting back to “Actual, Practicing, Serious Minded Catholic.”

That was “The Man Show”. Mildly suggestive but still a hoot! A place where a man could wallow in his own porcine masculinity 🐷🍺🏈😁

We men need our safe places too ❄️

I just remember on election night, how he was all puffed up and making mocking comments towards republicans and all ready to give the horse laugh at half the country.

The rest is history.
