With all the talk of the shortage of priests, I am wondering if you diocese encourages late vocations.

As for me:

Current Diocese: Archdiocese of Philadelphia - Upto age 40 on web site.

Hometown Diocese: Diocese of Greensburg, PA - Nothing on web site (Vocation page very Spartain in appearance), but do allow late vocations.

Our pastor was a late vocation. We also have a grandfather (widower) priest here in my parish. I don’t know that the diocesis actually encourages them, though.

One of our priests is also a “late vocationer” He was a surgeon in his previous life. He has been a priest for about 5 years and I thing he is in his late forties or early fifties

Over the last 2 years, 12 priests have been ordained, most of them late vocations. I think there was only 1 man under 30.

A couple of years ago a young man was ordained by our Cardinal, who was assisted by the young man’s father, who was already a priest. He had been ordained after being widowed, and thus was able to concelebrate his son’s ordination Mass.

This was a big deal for us because the son had been at our parish as an “intern”, serving as deacon for the last term before his ordination to the priesthood.
