Through a series of happy and providential events, I find myself a Catholic entrepreneur, crafting Catholic jewelry (primarily rosaries) and religious items for sale locally. The response has been positive enough that I am now in need of a name for my business, and would like a Latin word or phrase as my business identity. The phrase ‘Gloria Dei’ (‘Glory of God’) has been insistent in remaining with me throughout the deliberation process, and I find a very fitting and appropriate sentiment.
A cursory Google search to identify any heretofore unanticipated issues or conflicts with that name, however, resulted in pages and pages of the phrase utilized in conjunction with specifically Lutheran references, particularly as the name of numerous Lutheran churches. A similar phrase, ‘Gloria Deo,’ returns Baptist, WesleyAnglican
and non-denominational Christian results, but few, if any, Catholic ones.
My question is: If I decide to address my small business with either of these titles, will it convey the specificially Catholic association I desire? What would you, as a consumer, assume about the religious affiliation or nature of an enterprise with one of these names? Are there any associations with these phrases, positive or negative, of which I should be made aware?
