A question that just came up in conversation…

Was it ever appropriate/condoned/approved by the church to pray the rosary during Mass?

Is it still ok? Appropriate?

Does anyone know anything about this?

What about during consecration, readings or the Homily?

Thanks!

I believe my grandmother use to back when the altar boys use to pray the answers to the Mass with the Priest. The lay people didn’t take as much of an active part in the Mass then as we do now. I don’t think that most people pray the rosary during Mass now, I know I don’t, but some people may.

In the 1962 edition (pg. 8) of Fr. Lasance’ “New Roman Missal”, Fr. Lasance recommends using the missal to follow the liturgury with the priest. He also says;
Code:
 "It is quite right to say the Rosary at Mass; but the Missal is preferable, being pre-eminently the product of the mind and heart of the Church, filled and expressed with reverence and love for the divine Victim, Who day by day, in every part of the world, sacrifices Himself again for the glory of His Father, and for the salvation of souls." (a direct quote).
(pg. 11) “There are many excellent manuals of prayer in the English language containing appropriate and varied methods of hearing holy Mass. The Missal is intended for those whose devotion leads them to prefer to follow the Sacred Rite, as it were, step by step, and word by word.”

The Mass is the re-presentation of Calvary. If a person chose to say the Rosary and meditate on the Sorrowful Mysteries during the Mass, under Fr. Lasance’s example it would be alright, not maybe preferable, but alright.

As long as a Rosary being said during Mass is not disruptive, what is the harm?

I have a collection of Missals dating back many many yeare. In most of the pre-1962 versions it was stated that it was preferable to follow the Mass along with the Missal. However it was acceptable to either say combinations of Hail Marys, Gory Be’s and Our Fathers during parts of the Mass, or say the Rosary. There were prescribed times as when to say the prayers. They were not to take place during the Consecration for instance.

Of course most of the Missals that I have are Marian Missals and they naturally had a lean towards Mariology.
