Latin Mass questions?

Our Latin Mass community has been asked by a local Shrine to put on a workshop for people interested learning more about the Traditional Latin Mass. I would like to put together a simple FAQ pamplet for them, so I need to know what kinds of basic questions people may have about the Latin Mass.

I didn’t put this thread in the Traditional Catholic section because most of them already know the Latin Mass - I need questions from people that have never been or have only been a few times.

I ask people to simply put their questions, or for those that have been a couple of times, what information would make their experience at the Latin Mass better next time.

Please, please no arguments or debates - I really just need this info to better serve the people that will be coming to our workshop.

Here’s some questions. While I have been to the Extraordinary Form, these are questions that I would [suspect] pop up every now and then.

“Do you need to know Latin to participate?” (answer could include how to pronounce certain words; i.e. Agnus = “aynus;” procedit = “prochedit”)

“What is the dress etiquette?”

“What’s different [besides that its in Latin] from the Ordinary Form of the Mass?”

“Why do people still celebrate it?”
 
Dress code. Also, communicating on the tongue. Are the hymns in Latin. The readings and homily are not.
 
Why is the Epistle read from one side and the Gospel on the other? And why is the book placed at an angle on the Gospel side?

Why all the genuflections and bows?

Why all the kissing of the altar?

Why all the signs of the cross?
 
How does a Latin Mass differ from a normal mass, besides Latin being spoken?
 
Why is there an epistle side and gospel side of the church?

Why is the Cannon silent?

Go over how to follow along in the missalette…
 
How to use the missal?

What are the appropriate postures and gestures for laity?

Do we respond with the altar servers? How do we know when to respond?

Can you demonstrate how to take communion on the tongue? Do I say ‘Amen’?

What is the difference between Low and High Mass?

Do women have to cover their heads?

Is chatting to my friends before and after mass really innapropriate? 😉
 
What is the Latin Mass?

I think you should include this very basic question, mostly because I’ve been wondering it. I assume it’s a mass that is in Latin, but are there other differences?

You might want to check out this article that has a cursory summory of the two mass. I have skimmed through it only briefly so I you will need to read it for accuracy but is seems to contain most of the answers to your questions about what to include.

Thank you everyone for your (name removed by moderator)ut, anyone else with more questions to add??
 
One that I can think of is - do you need to bring anything (ie a missal) with to the mass. It’s nice to have one, but I know a lot of places that offer the Latin Mass provide booklets.
