What is the Latin phrase that is used to explain that sacraments work “on their own” - independent of the state of the soul of the priest or the recipient? (…Although the state of the recipient’s soul affects the amount of grace received, the sacrament will still “work,” etc.) I have an incomplete understanding of this and would love some help!

mercygate:
Ex opere operato
which, btw, translates literally “from (out of) the work performed” as in ‘it is accomplished in the doing’. i just thought that might help too.
