Hey everyone,

Someone just told me about a phrase used in the Extraordinary form. It spoke about the senses failing, pertaining to our faith in the Eucharist. It sounded really neat, but I’m having trouble finding it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance! God bless!

Maybe you’re thinking of “Tantum Ergo”, a hymn by Thomas Aquinas
  1. Tantum ergo Sacramentum
    Veneremur cernui:
    Et antiquum documentum
    Novo cedat ritui
    Praestet fides supplementum
    Sensaum defectui.
  2. Genitori, Genitoque
    Laus et jubilatio,
    Salus, honor, virtus quoque
    Sit et benedictio:
    Procedenti ab utroque
    Compar sit laudatio. Amen.
  3. Humbly let us voice our homage
    For so great a sacrament;
    Let all former rites surrender
    To the Lord’s New Testament;
    What the senses fail to fathom,
    Let us grasp through faith’s consent!
  4. Glory, honor, adoration
    Let us sing with one accord!
    Praised be God, almighty Father;
    Praised be Christ, his Son, our Lord;
    Praised be God the Holy Spirit;
    Triune Godhead, be adored! Amen.
Tantum Ergo

I think that’s it. Must have heard him wrong. Thanks so much! It’s greatly appreciated. 🙂

But the Tantum Ergo has nothing specifically to do with the EF. It is a eucharistic hymn sung at Benediction in both OF and EF venues.

Right. I never heard it in the EF. Beautiful language though.

One does not hear it in the OF, either. It is heard during Benediction, a rite which really has not changed. In OF parishes it is frequently still sung in Latin at Benediction, but sometimes in the vernacular.

Tantum Ergo
I think it’s actually ‘sensuum’ not ‘sensaum’.

I’ve never been at a Benediction in an OF parish but I have heard both Tantum Ergo and O Salutaris Hostia sung there (in Latin). Interesting that so many there actually knew the words.

Can I ask ?, I do not know why latin language was made the only thing I know about latin language is, it is use in the bible latin vulgate and before lord Jesus died to save us, those words he had spoken and used is latin

As many here would say, Latin is not the “only thing.” Most of us are Latin Rite, or Roman Catholic, and Latin is the foundational language. It is part of the cultural glue that binds us together and the primary, preeminent and official language of the Roman liturgy. There are other Catholic rites with other languages front-and-center.

Latin is used because it is a dead language and in dead languages the meaning of the words do not change. This allows no mistakes to be made in what we are professing. It keeps individuals from changing the meaning of the words used in the liturgy and the rituals outside of it. It is part of the Roman Rite and I do not understand why people want to do away with it or why they have a problem with it (not implying you do). Would we go to Germany and tell the Germans to change their language so we could better understand them? Maybe if we went to Japan and told them to do the same? Could you imagine a Japan where the Japanese didn’t speak Japanese? If not then how can we imagine a Latin Rite without Latin?

Latin is the language of the Roman Rite and part of that Rites Identity.👍

I’m really sorry because I forgot to put the period in the end of my sentence. The statement should be like this; Can I ask ?, I do not know why latin language was made. But anyway thank you very much because you reply to my question because I really don’t know anything.

I will tell something about the calamity happenings in the world, but I do not know if this is true. I heard and see a video from a store. It is about a prophet from India, his also a follower of our God Jesus. He was being interviewed by the leaders of different religions, their was even one catholic bishop went there to hear and ask, what the prophet will say, their are many people watched it. The prophet said that one time while he was reading about the book of revelation or the book of apocalypse, an angel with scroll suddenly appeared and talk to him and let him see some visions. The prophet said that the angel told him about some countries who have experience a calamity and told him why it happened to those countries and many people died. First is Thailand, the prophet said that the angel told him why a great flood happened on that country that killed so many people. The angel said the reason to the prophet, and the reason is about a law that contradicts to our Gods teaching and that is PROSTITUTION, and the prophets vision is; he saw another angel in the center of Pacific ocean making the water rise that created a very big tsunami and went to Thailand. Then the prophet said about his second vision and what the angel with scroll told him. The prophet said that the angel told him the reason, why Japan had an earthquake. The reason is about the culture of the people in Japan, because they worship other Gods, their are many witchcraft and magics in Japan, most people in Japan commits Idolatry, and most people in Japan only thinks of their technology, that they don’t spend a time to our God. Then the prophet said that his vision in Japan is; In Japan their was a very big sun and below the sun was a very big serpent, and another angel with incense flying near Japan, that caused a very strong earthquake when the fumes of the incense was released. Then the prophet said that the angel with scroll told him that their are still many things to come, that will happen, and the next country that will be hit is Philippines and China, and after those two country, the next one will be middle east and Russia, America. Then the angel said I will comeback and then the angel said goodbye to the prophet then flew to the oceans. Then the prophet said he thinks that Europe will be the last, because the angel hadn’t told him yet about Europe continent. Then the prophet said we must pray to our lord God together properly with strong faith, and love to our God. If this is true, I’ll never be surprise. And before I rest or sleep I always pray for all.

The Latin language was the language of a group of people in the part of central Italy called Latium. It was their ordinary, everyday language, which they used to write letters, buy groceries, flirt with each other, and everything else you use language for. Latin arose in the period starting around 700 or 600 BC, and by 100 BC or so had reached essentially the form, called Classical Latin, that it retains today. You can read more in the Wikipedia article on the History of Latin.

The Bible was actually written in Hebrew and Aramaic (the Old Testament) and Greek (the New Testament). None of the Bible was written in Latin, there is no evidence that Jesus ever spoke Latin, and none of Jesus’ sayings are preserved in Latin. It is theoretically possible that he spoke to Pontius Pilate (a Roman official) in Latin, but other than that it is generally agreed that his everyday language would have been Aramaic and he would have spoken Hebrew for religious use in the Temple. It is certainly true that all the New Testament records we have of what he said are in Greek. The Latin Vulgate is simply a translation of the original texts of the Bible into Latin, much like your modern English Bible is a translation of those same texts into English.

Probably not. But it is certain the inscription above Christ on the cross was in Latin, Hebrew, and Greek.
