Latin Wedding Music for OF

My fiancée and I are getting married this coming September and we are having a few problems with the music selections. Let me start of with a intro so you can better understand what we are looking for. We both attend the Traditional Mass in the extraordinary form here in St Louis at an Oratory under the authority of the Institute of Christ the King. However, for our guests and since we will be getting married in another city the mass will be the ordinary form. We are, however, having the organist from the latin mass play at our wedding. He is saying that we can have the propers chanted at our wedding. Now, I know what those are at a latin mass, but I have no idea where they would be placed in a new mass, and what the priest would be doing while they were chanted. The priest saying our wedding mass is very accommodating to our Latin preferences in music, but before I go to him with this, I want to understand what I am talking about. I would ask our organist, but we is way over my head.

Secondly, We are having a hard time with the Responsorial Psalm. I don’t want the run of the mill psalm used all the time. I think they all will sound too cheesy compared to the Chant or grandeur of the pipe organ. Does anyone have any suggestion? I have also heard the the gradual could be used instead? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

For the psalm you may want to just have it chanted using a simple chant mode. Your organist shoud be able to help you with that. Also, in the OF a Kyrie and Gloria are not normally done at weddings. After the procession and greeting the collect usually follows. Having said that as long as the priest is ok with it go for. For the eucharistic acclamation there are forms in the missal set to music which are simple chant. For an alleluia you may want to check out the Taize alleluias. There are a couple that are in keeping with the style of music you are using. Simple alleluia with chanted verse.

I highly recommend the The St. Gregory Hymnal and Catholic Choir Book by Nicola Montani (You can purchase one at www.LoomeBooks.com if you don’t have access to one.). It is filled with many traditional & beautiful hymns–some with Latin words and some with English words (O Santicima, Soul of My Savior, Adoramus te Christe, to name a few). These would be appropriate for your organist to play with or without a vocalist at various points throughout the ceremony. And the traditional melodies are sure to ring in the hearts of some of your older guests.

P.S. Another REALLY beautiful piece is Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus. It is great as an instrumental piece if you don’t have someone to sing the words. Your organist probably knows this one already.
