Contrary to scenes of hundreds of thousands of united Latinos marching across the country in support of immigration reform, a sizable number of the ethnic group opposes the marches and strongly objects to illegal immigration.

But their voices have largely been muffled by the massive protests, which will continue Monday as tens of thousands of demonstrators are expected to take to the streets of Tucson, Phoenix and other cities nationwide.

They are voicing their support of a Senate bill that would give an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants living in the country a chance for U.S. citizenship.

Not really… 15-30% probably have reservations but the majority are not. I say the lady who can trace her roots back to Spain should also be deported. If you can trace your roots to any country but the USA… I say you should leave. See how insensitive that sounds? And yet, some of them have the audocity to say such things. WOW…

You seem to be saying that someone who enters the USA illegally should be on the same level as a person whose ancestors entered legally? I’m sorry, but your post confused me a little here.

Yes Hispanics, Latinos, Chicanos (What are we calling ourselves today? I don’t know; we keep changing. I just consider myself American.) are divided on this issue even in the home. I’ve heard and participated in some discussions and how a person sides seems to depend on the following: the length of time somebody’s been in this country, whether or not they have family in other Latin-American countries, whether or not they have experienced discrimination, how hard they’ve worked to make it where they are today with little to no outside assistance. These are only a few issues. Of course you have those Mexican-Americans who never came to this country from Mexico. They’ve lived on this soil for generations going from being Spanish to Mexican to Texan (for those under the Republic of Texas flag) then to Americans and don’t always feel they can relate to the issue at hand.

Of course Christian charity is always underlying, so the discussions can get pretty emotional.

We dont know if her ancestors entered legally? How did you come to that conclusion? Sorry about the confusion. This whole talk of shipping people back is what I find to be troublesome. I even read where someone stated they “illegals” should be put into concentration camps. Some, so called Americans, were burning the flags from Mexico and other countries … sad all around.

There are alot of things troublesome on both sides. One of the many things concerning me is the lumping of all Hispanics together and another is the extreme comments such as the one you mentioned. I’ve always considered myself a conservative, but now some conservatives (and notice I said some) are scaring me. There seems to be an underlying hatred; I’ve read some comments on a conservative forum & am horrified at what people say. I hope it’s just people blowing off steam.

When will we ever learn that all people are children of God and are deserving of love & compassion?

I dont know, it seems that hate becomes entrenched and it skews reality of this whole issue. YES, we need measures in place to allow immigrants to come in with the help of a good system.

As for your last question… unf. I fear this will never trully happen because everyone (and I lump myself in this category) is so preoccupied with their own bubble that they forget that the ones who really need our help are the neighbors to our left and right. Life is so short on Earth to bicker about who should and shouldnt be given that right. And I do think we need measures to control who comes in legally. But at the pace our govt is headed… I am not holding my breath.

What about the so called want to be Americans burning the American flag? Not good IMO.

I think that the media has an agenda. Here in Chicagoland, while there are many Latino illegals there are also many Polish, Russian, Chinese, Irish, etc. illegals. Those who immigrated here legally from Poland, Russia, China, Ireland, etc. are upset with those from their own countries who skirted around the system. I think with Latinos it is different b/c SO many Latinos (natural born, citizens, and here legally) are discriminated against because they are Latino. My daughter is half Mexican and I already have noticed that my racist family members have ceased telling their racist Latino jokes b/c even though I was vocally against the jokes in the past, I’m now moreso b/c of my daughter. And I think they realize that it is unloving to their granddaughter/neice/cousin.
