Recently, my brother read a book regarding the “law of attraction”. Now, he ascribes everything to this “law of attraction” and brings it up constantly whenever something good or bad happens. I’m worried that it may be contradictory to the Catholic faith. After telling me what it was, I admit I initially found no fault with it. Where can I get a Catholic perspective on this? Does it contradict the faith? Help please.

I’m no expert, but I have read a little about it. I do know it is a long way from being compatible with Catholic teaching. It is, in my opinion, new age garbage.

This is part of New Age types of thought. Wayne Dwyer is a large proponent as are many other “I can create my future” which tends to lead to “I can create my world” which quickly becomes “I am the Creator” which God has a pretty big problem with since he actually filled that position.

It is good to stay away from these types of belief systems.

BTW-Women of Grace and Susan Brinkmann have a lot of information on the New Age and dangers of it.

“The Secret” is a well-known book that promotes this “Law of Attraction”. It is New Age tripe. Sharon Giganti, who is occasionally featured on Catholic Answers Live warns people to avoid such teachings. Your brother should run from this and get a good spiritual director to help him return to faith.

Thank you this. The “creating” part makes sense to me, I think I’ll use your line of reasoning the next time my brother brings it up. Thanks again.

Hit the nail on the head!

2 hrs of watching him on OWN, and reading a couple of his books, but I still couldn’t quite state it that succintly and completely.
