Lawrence, Kansas?

So it seems Lawrence is close to a lot of other cities…

I have a question, do any of y’all know about transportation to and from these places, say if you didn’t have a car the first year and still wanted to commute? Is it possible, even from Kansas City…?
 
No. There is no way to get from Lawrence to KC using public transportation. There are two highways, I-70 and K-10, that will take you through 20 miles or so of farmland until you reach western JOCO.
 
I know there is a bus from Lawrence to Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, because my friend’s daughter rides it to classes there. You might check Johnson County Transit to see what they have.(www.thejo.com) From JCCC, there are probably buses to take you other places. Check the Kansas City Metro buses.(www.kcata.org). I don’t know if Lawrence has a bus system. Hope this helps.🙂

I was not aware they put in this route. I checked it, and there is a route, but you should be aware that the ride is over an hour from KU to Johnson County Community College.

It is not convenient or easy to get around Kansas City on the bus if you are outside of the Midtown or Downtown area. If you plan to do this, you will need 2-3 times the commute time and will have to plan to walk in certain areas.

The Kansas City area is not laid out like the typical metropolitan area is in St. Louis or Chicago. What would be considered the “suburbs” are more like small towns connected by the Interstate. That doesn’t make for a convenient way to travel by public transportation.

If you are expecting to be able to get around easily, they way you could in DC or NY or Chicago, or even Dallas, you will be disappointed.
 
Another thought, while we’re talking about commuting (and I second the PPs that you will be much better off NOT relying on public transportation). The cost of living in Lawrence is ridiculous compared to the surrounding area. Especially with gas prices being more manageable, I think you’d be happier and better off choosing to live elsewhere and commute to Lawrence.
 
I visited a friend who lives there once and was there for a few days. It seemed friendly and nice to me, but I was just sort of walking around the streets and stopped for a bite to eat a few times.
