Lay Catholic Missions?

Hello! I am wondering if there are any Catholic organizations that allow lay Catholics to have paid jobs doing missionary work overseas and in America that do not obligate the worker to continually remain on the missions (time to take breaks and see family). Or are missions usually just volunteer? If so, how do missionaries generally support themselves?
