Hello,

I’m in the process of discerning a vocation with the Lay Dominicans. I will be contacting my local chapter next week to obtain more information and see if I can attend a chapter meeting. Can anyone tell me what actually goes on during a chapter meeting? In other words, do chapter members study scripture or theological works by Dominican priests? I’d like to have some idea as what I should expect at a meeting.

Peace,
J

The formation program is two years. You’ll likely be given the chance to attend meetings, then make application for the Inquirer year. Candidate is the second year.

Depending on the region you’re in, that particular province will have it’s own variation of the formation program.

Dominican history; the Liturgy; prayer; and other topics are covered in a modular format. Scripture and Catechism are apportioned, as well.

When I was making the meetings in Louisville KY, we would sit in the same place – the first couple of pews on the upper right. We would make our way over to the basement of the priory where we would have a sack lunch. We would have some scripture, then our chaplain would talk to us. Afterwards, we would make our way to the chapel upstairs, and receive instruction on the Office, or pray Midday Prayer. The chaplain would give us absolution from offenses against the Rule, then dismiss us. We sometimes hung out afterwards. If I wasn’t in college, I could stay longer.

When I started the group in TN, we would meet first, then go upstairs to the church, and pray the office. This usually gave us an opportunity to spend time in prayer before Mass.

Blessings,

Hi Cloisters,

Thanks for the information. Can you tell me what kind of apostolates professed lay Dominicans engage in?

I’ve personally worked in Cloistered vocations promotion for the last 30 years. Additionally, I engaged in sidewalk counseling, and helped start First Friday and Saturday adoration at the Knoxville cathedral.

One of our Lay Dominicans founded something like four crisis pregnancy centers in Louisville KY. Another lived her Apostolate as a Catholic elementary teacher. Yet another landed a good job counseling abused women when they first came into the ER. Our group in TN were majority pro-life and did sidewalk counseling. That’s how I got involved.

I find it interesting that opportunity will present itself. As St Francis de Sales says, “Don’t go looking for the cross, it will find you.”

Ours was:

Morning Prayer
Fellowship (ie, coffee, dounuts, and catching up)
Fraternity business
Study/discussion (Dominican author or subject matter)

Dear Cloisters and TvKnight,

Thanks for the information.

Sincerely,

J
