Iāve never seen them with mitres pr se, but I have seen them with crosiers. Never mitres though.Fascinating, I did not know that.

Why would it bother you if it is a traditional practice? If recent I can certainly see but knowing it (if it) was practiced traditionally I donāt have the slightest issue with it.

People may confuse it with a female ordination to the episcopate. Thus, it isnāt that I disapprove of it as a practice, I simply believe it may be unintentionally scandalous.

I was being silly. I was thinking of sisters teaching in Catholic schools and laying down the law with a ruler. If that thought is already scary for quite a few people, what would be their reaction to a woman in a habit carrying something as big as a crosier, they would duck for cover.

Putting aside the question of whether laity can wear birettas (outside of a seminary) the short answer is that you should wear whatever altar servers in your parish usually wear. If they donāt wear birettas then thatās your answer. The cost might also make you think twice: anything from $79 up to about $225!

is patently obvious that those who are not in orders may wear cassock and surplice. It is done all the time all over the place. Even women (omg!!!) may wear cassock and surplice. In my parish we wear cassock and a square-neck surplice and I always wear a white shirt done up to the top .

That is debatable. In my parish, the girls wear white albs and cinctures in the liturgical color, while the boys and men wear cassock and surplice.
(We also have a dress code, and presentable shoes are available in the closet for those found without them.)

Only if you are a seminarian, and even then this is generaly only found nowadays at seminaries that teach the Extraordinary Form of the Mass.
