I was debating between getting a missal and getting a prayer book but since I’ve decided to go to Latin Mass at least once a month, I decided to get a missal. The Angelus Press and Baronius missals are quite pricey but I discovered the Layman’s Missal which has the mass for Sundays, Principal Feasts, and Liturgy of the Sacraments. It’s about $20. Any thoughts or suggestions? I figure since I’m only going to go to TLM once a month, I don’t need a daily missal.

Try a search on Ebay. I have purchased several missals for 5-10 bucks each plus a little shipping.

Vatican II Hymnal

750 pages long • Complete Readings for all Sundays and Major Feasts (Years ABC) • First Hymnal ever printed to contain complete texts for the Sung Propers • More than a hundred pages of Mass Settings (Roman Missal, 3rd Edition) • Complete texts in Latin and English for Ordinary & Extraordinary Forms of the Mass • Beautiful Hymns, including more than 100 pages of Communion Hymns • Chabanel Responsorial Psalms, Garnier Alleluias, Motets, and much more!

🙂

I have four suggestions:
  1. The Red Mass book, usually provided at E.F. masses, paperback, around $6.00 at your local Catholic Bookseller. Mass text only no readings or feast days, etc. but those can be found on line on a trad calander.
  2. I got a New Marion Missal at a local Chatholic book store for around $20.00,
  3. I found a “well used” missal, 1945 edition, in a Ctholic bookstore for $10,00. It doesn’t include 1962 revisions nor does it contain any Latin text but it was a help early on in following the mass,
  4. I found a 1908 missal in a used book shop, again pre-1962 but mass text pretty much the same, and wealth of devotional info, about twenty bucks, as I remember, and lastly,
  5. I bought a new missal through my traditional parish for no more than $35.00.
Best advice: keep looking!!!

I’ve been looking but not seeing any deals. I’ll keep searching.

This looks promising. . .Do you know if it is purse-sized?

We have those red missals at the parish. I was thinking the paperback wouldn’t hold up well. I will look into the New Marion Missal. . .Oddly enough, I thought I would find the best deal on a missal online. Maybe I should check out a few local places first.

Thanks!

Based on the pics, it looks slim but bigger (longer) than the average missal. It looks very promising though. . .I like that it’s also a hymnal because I play the piano. My mother always enjoy me playing from her hymnal but there are so many nice hymns that are new to me that I would love to share with her. 👍

I suggest getting the “My Sunday Missal” by Father Stedman, now reprinted with an updated calendar of movable feasts by Neumann Press. It fits in your back pocket, has all the Sundays, Holy Days for Americans, and the Nuptial and Requiem Masses to boot, for $25.

The only catch is the original was printed in 1954 so it doesn’t include the Holy Week changes of 1955. Otherwise, it’s really no different from the 1962 missal. Never gave me a problem, though I just penciled in St. Joseph’s name in the Canon.

It looks like they updated it:
“Includes the addition of 94 pages for the 1962 Holy Week and Easter Vigil”

However, just to clarify, does this one only have the ordinary form of the latin mass?

ETA: Wait, I may be getting confused: is it automatically the extraordinary form because it’s pre 1962? :o

I’m glad to hear they updated it.

I’m not sure what you mean here. I’ll give two answers so to cover both bases.

a) It’s pre-1969 so it contains the extraordinary form of the Roman rite, of course.

b) It includes both the ordinary of the Mass and the propers of the Mass for each Sunday and Holy Day of obligation.

I edited my post because I was confusing myself LOL. Thank you, I get it now. I liked the sample pages I saw on the website so I’m ordering this one right now. So excited! 😃

1962 Missal My Sunday Missal Explained by Father Stedman. (Latin Tridentine, pre-1962). This is a new but exact reproduction edition of this famous and most popular missal. [2012 Upgrade: Now printed on higher quality paper.] This Sunday missal contains the complete Masses for Sundays, Holy Days, important feast days of St. Joseph, Christ the King, Mass for the dead, and the Nuptial Mass. (Includes the addition of 94 pages for the 1962 Holy Week and Easter Vigil). The Ordinary of the Mass is set up with the Latin on the left hand page and the English on the right hand page with clear notations on when to turn to the specific Mass of the day (Introit, Epistle, Gospel, Offertory, Communion Verse and Postcommunion). In addition, My Sunday Missal includes a full page analysis, along with a small illustration, devoted each Sunday and Feast to the special theme of each Mass; each Mass has a catechism lesson and covers the entire catechism in the course of the year; Masses designated for special Votive Masses; explanation of the Mass vessels and vestments; Prayer Before Mass; prayers every Catholic should know; rosary meditations, morning and evening prayers, preparation for confession; after Communion prayers, etc. This is the definitive and complete Sunday missal printed in easy to read type. It has 606 neat and comfortable to follow pages, yet it is only a little over 3" x 5" and 1" thick! Easy to read, but very compact–sized for pocket or purse. Bound to last, thin semi-hard flexible leatherette cover, durable quality sewn-signatures, 3-1/4 x 5-1/8 size, 606 pages.

For the compact size, the font looks very readable.

This cost under $31 with shipping. 👍 I think this is just right for a beginner like me. Thanks to all who answered my questions and especially RichC.

Yeah, I have the Stedman’s missal. If you’re looking for a purse-sized missal, that’s your best bet IMHO. I also have the St. Joseph’s daily missal and the Angelus Press Roman Catholic Daily Missal. They each have their pro’s and con’s, but they are bigger.

The Stedman missal is easy to follow and is compact. It is not the most beautiful missal in the world, but that’s not a big deal if you’re looking for function.

If my community had a regularly scheduled TLM, I’d probably use my St. Joseph’s Daily Missal just because I learned to pray the TLM with that.

So, I got my missal today (after a delay because of a problem with the USPS ). I was nervous when I saw just how small it is (literally palm-size) but the font is large enough.

Anyhoo, after looking through it, I have my two markers set for the ordinary of the mass and for this Sunday (the 16th Sunday After Pentecost). My question is, I don’t see the Asperges Me. Isn’t that done at every high mass? Maybe I’m not looking in the right section? Also, there seems to be a fair amount of flipping back and forth between the ordinary of the mass and theintroit prayer, epistle, gradual, etc. I suppose that’s normal?

Should I have it blessed? Anything else I should know? LOL. Thanks. 👍

The Asperges Me is not in the Stedman’s Missal. It’s not too hard to memorize. Besides, if you have your missal out during the Asperges Me, it might get hit with Holy Water and the gilding will get all spotted. 😃

I like the little catechetical additions to the Stedman’s Missal. they make for great meditations during the silent parts of the Mass (e.g… after Communion).

LOL I guess that’s a good thing. Although I’m pretty sure I have the updated missal with the new Holy Week changes the missal is under 500 pages not 606 as it stated online. I may call to confirm.

Just a quick update: for anyone looking for a Sunday missal for the EF, this is a GREAT choice! It’s perfectly compact, easy to read and easy to hold. I used it for a daily Latin mass and a Sunday low mass and it worked for both. Highly recommended.
