LDS: Curse of Cain and other questions

I was recently reading through the Joseph Smith thread. Towards the end, someone mentioned the Curse of Cain believed by LDS. Could someone please explain what this belief is please?

Simply put, in the mormon religion, they believe/or did believe, that when Cain killed Abel that God cursed Cain and his decendents with black/dark skin.

This was the main reason used for denying blacks the priesthood until 1978.

Something to keep in mind is that the Bible, NAB,RSV, and KJV) do not show this at all. In fact, there are only a few versus in Genesis that talk about Cain being cursed. However, the KJV-Joseph Smith translation has multiple paragraphs about it.

I was taught something similar to this except that it was the curse of Canaan through Ham. (Genesis 9) But, I can’t remember if this was a teaching from the independent Bible teacher that I was forced to watch growing up or the Baptist affiliated Christian school that I attended.

I encountered similar teachings as a kid. Mostly in a Baptist Church, and tent revivals.

I am curious if this Curse of Cain is anyway related to the serpent seed doctrine. Also, can someone expand on the LDS belief that the native americans were Israelites?

Here is a wiki article on the Serpent Seed Doctrine. As you will see, it appears to be based on one of the Gnostic Gospels of Phillip. (Gnostic gospels are not included in the Bible Canon)

As far as native americans. Mormons believe that some of the tribes mentioned in the Book of Mormon are/were the decendents of some of the tribes of Israel. However, DNA research has proven that to be false.

The 10 lost tribes theory…is this the same or from a similar thought pattern as the British Israelism? I know that British Israelism stems from the idea that the 10 tribes scattered through Europe (and that the monarchy in England can be traced to David), but I remember watching a documentary showing how there are traces of ancient Hebrew in the US. This documentary was produced by someone who believes in British Israelism.
