is the cathoilc church fair game for the lds? on saturday on my way to morning mass, we had 2 mormons handing out their leaflets to people going into the cathedral, asking sir do you believe in god? of course we blooming well do, we are going to holy mass now get of the entrance way and let people get into mass
( they were standing 10 foot from the entrance of the cathedral)
is it policy for your community to target church goers at mass time? if it is you are well out of order, they were promptly moved on by the men of the parish, please ask your missionaries to refrain from standing outside other christian churches when you send them to europe thanks

we get this at least once a month from various rabidly anti-Catholic sects or groups, usually left on windshields. If I got a papal blessing from Pope Benedict on my windshield I would toss it, there is nothing that annoys me more than coming out of Mass on a rainy morning with a wet sheet of paper stuck on the windshield. So far we have had nothing identifying our local LDS, but they do go door to door. Sometimes we get LDS and JW on the same day, summer must be their best time. Somebody unidentified spray painted our large statue of the Sacred Heart outside sometime back and left “whore of babylon” type pamphlets on windshields. Police cruisers Sunday AM kept them away for a while.

Very odd. Mormon missionaries are usually expected to be in their OWN churches on Sunday mornings–and pretty much all Sunday day long, since most Mormon chapels have several congregations meeting in the same building. (Missionaries do a lot of ‘grunt’ work for LDS bishops, such as leading a class when theregular teacher is absent, etcetera). More to the point–Mormons are discouraged from proselyting active members of other sects, and one would assume that people strolling into a Roman Catholic Cathedral on a Sunday morning would qualify as ‘active’. Mormons, btw, get leafleted all of the time too–and they HATE it as much as Catholics do. Moreover–activities like this very often generate really negative publicity, a no-no in the LDS Church. They have no qualms about evangelizing members who are either ‘inactive’ or who are otherwise questioning their present religious affilliation, of course, but I have a hard time understanding why LDS Missionaries would be at a Catholic Cathedral on a Sunday morning leafleting people.

Not saying it didn’t happen but I sure would like to seek some concrete evidence that people aren’t mistaking some other group for Mormons. Mebbe a scanned copy of the leaflets, and/or cell-phone pictures of the purported ‘missionaries’ handing stuff out. Sometimes these sorts of allegations are a little like UFO sightings–everyone claims to have seen one, but no one actually has any proof.

sorry meant to say it was a saturday, was going to mass then confession, the only day i get get confession due to work commitments, perhaps the 2 missionaries were just being a little to enthusiastic, normally they are a pleasant bunch who dont stray onto other peoples churches,

Tracting in front of another church is not an acceptable practice and if the Mission President knew they were doing that they would be in serious hot water.

Look in your phone book and find the phone number for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (and in some areas there is a seperate number for the Mission Office but if not just call the number listed or let me know roughly where you live and I can find the number for you) and call the Mission Office and let them know these missionaries are doing this. They need to be told (or re-told) that this is unacceptable.

God Bless.

Oh, thank you. And this will really help, do you think? Now is this only for those who are tracting in front of another Church, or can it also help someone privately in their own home? For instance, repeatedly I have found Mormon missionaries outside talking to my son when he is mowing the lawn or coming up to my daughter. I am under the obligation to have my children learn the Catholic faith- this is my responsibility as their mother. If I call the LDS office, can they stop these young men from approaching my children and my house?

Yes the mission office can take care of any problems you are having with the missionaries.

If you have asked them to stop coming to your home and/or not to be trying to convert your children when they see them in the yard, they are supposed to honor your wishes and not be coming back to your house, but occaionally you get missionaries that don’t always follow the rules. In that case you can go over their head and report them to the mission office and get them to stop coming to your home. It’s not necessary that you know their names, though if you do that’s better.

Even when I was a member I’ve had to deal with the mission office a time or two myself.

God Bless

I’ve not heard any stories about LDS missionaries doing this in the US. In fact, the only place I’ve heard of them doing this is in Europe. And I’ve heard a few stories about them doing this in Europe. Is this maybe something that still is promoted/condoned in Europe?

Cainem,
Having been a missionary myself I can tell you that we were told not to proselyte in front of other churches, passing out leaflets, etc. I don’t think it’s considered a serious breach of the rules so much as a “less effective” proselytizing method. These tactics you described don’t sound like LDS missionary tactics. Are you sure they were LDS? We are often confused with other groups.

Also, keep in mind that with 50 to 60 thousand missionaries serving around the world at any given time (the vast majority of them being young men between 19 and 21), a few will break the rules or get a bit over zealous, etc.

Iwonder,
You seem to suggest you’re family is being stalked by missionaries. If that is the case, call the police. Or could it be that you’re exaggerating just a little…?

thank you for your replies, i am sure they were your missionaries, they identified themselves as such, also they were wearing their name badge, you are right casen probably just a couple of over zealous teenagers who will learn from there mistake, i doubt they will return after being asked to move on by myself and others in a firm but friendly manner

As an ex-LDS who served an LDS mission I can say that it is general policy to not approach people who have asked to be left alone. The LDS Church certainly does not want to alienate anyone. I’m sure if you contact the mission president’s office you will see the results you seek.

Once I was attending the Saturday Vigil Mass at my parish. About ten minutes into the Mass, 5 or 6 LDS missionaries came in complete with their white shirts, ties, and nametags that say “Elder So-and-So. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” I have seen them do this at a Baptist Sunday evening service I was at one time, too. I didn’t see them proselytizing, but it’s pretty unlikely they were there because they are interested in the Catholic religion.

I served my LDS mission in Chile and used to attend other churches on occasion, sometimes with just my missionary companion and sometimes with investigators (people we were teaching). When we went alone it was just out of interest, not to proselytize or mock but because we found it interesting. When we went with investigators it was usually because we made a deal that we would attend their church if they would attend ours. This was a technique I tried a few times. After visiting each service we would discuss how they felt. It worked well a few times until one family decided they liked those darn Baptists better than us!

Really? I was under the impression that LDS missionaries (as well as all LDS) were discouraged from going to other churches.

I can understand why that might be the case in general but I don’t remember every being discouraged from attending other churches in my mission and did on several occasions.

Actually no, Members, including missionaries, are encouraged to attend other churches to understand the differences in doctrines (though prosletysing at someone elses services is a big no-no)

It is far better to learn of another religion by actually attending the church services and talking to the pastor than to listen to idle gossip and rumors on the street.

Those missionaries that came in 10 minutes late should have just slipped in and sat down quietly. Usually missionaries are very respectful when attending other services, but again, sometimes you get a kid or two who just dosen’t have his head screwed on quite right.

God Bless.

Yes, I have found that almost 100% of LDS members and missionaries are very respectful. Not all, but the vast majority.

Even that’s not always the best way to learn (though better than going to an anti- site). There are pastors, attendees, etc. in every church that don’t hold to the true beliefs of that religion. Wierd huh? Why would you remain to be Catholic, LDS, Baptist, etc. if you didn’t believe in what that church taught??
