I was just posting a reply to the question of it taking a village to raise a child. It made me think of something that happened this week. I suggested a possible career to a child I know. I said she’d make a terrific nurse. Later I wondered if her parents would be grateful or ungrateful for my suggestion. Perhaps, they’d like her to be a doctor. Any thoughts about whether you should give children possible career options if you have some influence over them, provided their parents let you have some influence over them.

As long as you’re not overly pressuring them, sure. Career choice ultimately won’t belong to the parents anyway, so I wouldn’t worry overmuch about what career the parents want the child to have. I think good parents will be happy so long as their child turns out to be able to support themselves without moral danger and is happy with what they’re doing.

Yep. I shocked a friend of mine when I said I don’t care if my kids are garbagemen or astronauts as long as they’re happy.

I don’t think making suggestions is a bad thing. Sometimes we have blinder on and never consider other options so a suggestion might open new avenues that someone might not have considered.

I’ll tell my kids, “Even Scrooge McDuck had to work hard to earn his vault of coins”. 😁
