Hello all,

I live in D.C. now and actually am right next door to the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception! I have visited the Byzantine Chapel there, and also a small icon shop near our metro stop. I just found out the Shrine of the Holy Family is actually a Byzantine Parish, so I’m hoping to visit soon!

I’m a very happy Latin Rite Catholic, but I’ve been wanting to learn more about the Eastern Church. Can you recommend some reading, websites, or prayers? Thank you in advance!

To learn more about the Eastern Church go to Vespers and Divine Liturgy. 🙂

There are a number of threads here on the subject of books to read, prayer books, websites. Just a few I would recommend for a book Bread & Water, Wine & Oil: An Orthodox Christian Experience of God.

Videos, I like the monks of Holy Resurrection Monastery “Who are Eastern Catholics?” PART 1 with Fr. Maximos of Holy Resurrection Monastery and Part 2

Eastern Catholic Theology PART 1 with Fr. Abbot Nicholas and PART 2

Feasting in the Byzantine Church Year with Fr. Moses and Fasting in the Byzantine Church Year with Fr. Moses

Eastern Catholic Church - An Introduction with Fr Tom Loya, who also has a weekly radio program “Light of the East”

If you go to any of those in YouTube you’ll many other videos regarding ECCs.

You should also study up on Eastern spirituality in both the Catholic and Orthodox traditions. There is a whole host of spiritual practices and teachings that would be interesting in looking into.

There was actually a Syro Malabar Syriac Qurbana (it is rare for the Qurbana or Holy Mass, to be chanted in Syriac in the United States) at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Our Major Archbishop, Latin Cardinal Wuerl, numerous priests, and many faithful were present.

Here are some videos from the event:

Thank you, dear friends! I have not yet been able to attend a Divine Liturgy, but I will hopefully be going soon. 🙂

In addition to everything else, there’s a wonderful Melkite church across the river in McLean. A visit to Holy Transfiguration would give you a glimpse of the Divine Litury in the Greek/Middle Eastern tradition.

If you like listening to podcasts, I would recommend the “Catholic Stuff You Should Know” series. One of the priests who hosts this is a Byzantine Catholic Priest, and he does a wonderful job explaining some of the rites of the Church, and he is very familiar with the Roman Rite, too, so he does a wonderful job of comparing and contrasting some our our beliefs. Fr. Michael O’Laughlin recently joined the group of priests who host this, so you only need to listen to the past 4-5 months worth of podcasts to get the Byzantine perspective. I do highly recommend this podcast to anyone who wants to learn more about the faith- the men who present on here are amazing and funny, too. Very entertaining.
