Learning More about the Eastern Rite

Hi all,

I think this Saturday I will be attending ding my first Eastern Liturgy. It’s at a Romanian Byzantine Catholic parish.

Does anybody know where I should start? Where CAN I get affordable reading materials. Anyone habe a prayer rope to spare? lol. I feel a little overwhelemed but I am feeling a tug toward the East. I also don’t think my wife completely understands.

Advice?

How wonderful! Is your wife going to go with you? It sounds like you have already started. Because the Romanians are so small and relatively new in this country, they don’t have a lot of materials in English from their own Eparchy. The Romanians that I am familiar with tend to use Ruthenian Books & Music, with some modifications. You can look up those materials and instead of the Divine Liturgy ahead of time at the Metropolitan Cantor Institute.

You can use a rosary to pray the Jesus prayer. It’s a good place to start.
 
For starters, don’t try to follow along with any materials. The responses are relatively easy so no need to flip pages. You can read the readings ahead of time. It will be the 19th Sunday after Pentecost (assuming the church is on the Gregorian calendar). They are 2 Corinthians 11:31-12:9; Luke 6:31-36
