Weekend Edition Sunday, November 25, 2007 · I was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness. If I ever knocked on your door when you were mowing the lawn or taking a nap, please excuse me. I understand: A kid with a Watchtower magazine on your front porch isn’t a Girl Scout with cookies, but, hey, you didn’t have to sic your dog on me.

I believe how we treat the people we dislike the most and understand the least — Jehovah's Witnesses, for example — says a lot about the freedoms we value in America: religion, speech and personal liberty. And all of these freedoms rely on one thing: tolerance.

Hi

Patience or tolerance is a good quality that a human should have for his fellow human being. All the ProphetsMessengers of GodAllah were endowed with this quality, this is what we understand from Quran/Islam/Muahmmad.

Quran
[6:34] We know indeed that what they say grieves thee; for surely it is not thee that they charge with falsehood but it is the Signs of Allah that the evil-doers reject.
[6:35] And the Messengers indeed have been rejected before thee, but notwithstanding their rejection and persecution they remained patient until Our help came to them. There is none to change the words of Allah. And there have already come to thee some of the tidings of the past Messengers.

The definition of tolerance has changed over the years. Originally it meant that “I” would be patient with “you” and “your” beliefs and accept that “you” have a right to them and their expression. However, now it has changed to mean that “your” beliefs are just as equal to what “I” believe in addition to the aforementioned criteria.

It has moved much beyond tolerance to a moral/religious/political ambiguity that is not consider true or untrue but rather “what is right for me” Certain beliefs over the years have been “tolerated” in the true sense but now are seen as being equal to all others in this age of relativeism. It makes you wonder if pedophilia will one day become “tolerated” in a modern sense.
