I think lectors are supposed to bow to the altar as they go up to proclaim the Word; ours pass by the tabernacle on their way to the ambo and genuflect going and coming. Reference, please!

From the GIRM:

**
Genuflections and Bows
  1. Three genuflections are made during the Mass: after the showing of the eucharistic bread, after the showing of the chalice, and before communion.
If there is a tabernacle with the blessed sacrament in the sanctuary, a genuflection is made before and after Mass and whenever anyone passes in front of the Blessed Sacrament.
  1. There are two kinds of bow, a bow of the head and a bow of the body:a) A bow of the head is made when the three divine Persons are named together and at the name of Jesus, Mary and the saint in whose honor Mass is celebrated.
b) A bow of the body, or profound bow, is made: toward the altar if there is no tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament; during the prayers, Almighty God, cleanse and Lord God, we ask You to receive; within the profession of faith at the words, by the power of the Holy Spirit; in Eucharistic Prayer I (Roman Canon) at the words, Almighty God, we pray. The same kind of bow is made by the deacon when he asks the blessing before the gospel. In addition, the priest bends over slightly as he says the words of the Lord at the consecration.**

So then, it is correct to genuflect when approaching the ambo, if passing the tabernacle…

It stands to reason, then, but I just would like clarification ~ it is wrong to bow when approaching the ambo, if the tabernacle is located in the center of the sanctuary, directly behind the altar…correct?

Most of our readers, lecters, and those who approach the altar to present offertory gifts bow, rather than genuflect. My daughter was told not to genuflect when as a 6th grader, she was to read at a Mass, which the whole school was attending. (She was instructed to only bow, not genuflect, at the practice the day before the Mass ~ not during Mass!) She had always genuflected, so when instructed not to, she asked “Why?” The reason given was “We’re not supposed to genuflect any more. Just bow, like this…”

You already show reverence to the Tabernacle during the procession when you first approach the altar.

I Lector for two parishes, and all Lectors / Eucharistic Ministers bowing to the altar or genuflecting to the Tabernacle is no longer necessary (according to the GIRM) since you already showed a sign of reverence at the start of Mass. I would prefer to show reverence each time I approached the altar, but we have to follow the instructions 🙂
