Legal obligation to do penance on Friday?

Strawman.

Why does an obligation have to be “binding under pain of sin” to remain an obligation? I think this is the argument that is being sidestepped.
You have no authority to impose this upon others as being sinful, when that is not the essence of the Bishops’ statement. I pray they are not paying you any attention, and if any doubt has been created by you herein, I trust they will consult their pastor.

In light of all the evidence that has been given to you in this thread, I am astounded that you still feel the need to trump it with your own interpretation, which of course, is infallible.

Where did I say it was sinful? 🤷
Oh my, oh my! Isn’t that the thrust of this entire thread? AND the last one? Are you now saying it is not a sin? Then you are in agreement with CAF apologists, EWTN, Jimmy Akin, my priest, and Fr. Z, who all said the same thing. Whereas it is not a sin, it is encouraged as a volutary act to unite with Christ’s sacrifice and His asking that we do penance. It doesn’t always have to be on Friday. Just the vicissitudes of life alone, accepted peacefully as God’s will for us, will offer any of us plenty of opportunity.

Please stop bearing false witness.
You misread my question. It was clearly not a statement of affirmation that you are wrongfully asserting as my bearing false witness.

I ask again that you clarify.
Q. Are you now saying it is not a sin?

If you are not making a statement either way, what the heck ARE you saying?

What I have been saying all along.

No matter what anyone says, whether Fr Z, Jimmy Akin or what have you, it is the USCCB that has the authority to interpret their document and say what their intentions are. Anything else is just talk.

Just because an obligation is no longer binding under pain of sin, does not mean that it is no longer an obligation.

JM3, you have been all over the map flipflopping with vacillating opinions. I think at this point, I’m not going to listen to another word from you, since you do not seem to have a clear statement whatsoever. Here and here

JM3:
Can. 1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday.

Answer: The US is not exempt from this Canon.

curious. :hmmm:

Thus the law of abstinence from meat is still binding unless one’s national bishops’ conference has provided for alternate forms of penance. In the United States, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops has obtained permission from the Vatican for such substitution. Catholics are obliged to do some form of penance on Fridays and keep the day as per canon 1249, but now they can choose the form of penance they wish to do.

For what its worth, I don’t believe she’s right about you.
Thank you.

Of course, Sirach2 didn’t give post 18 where I said this,

Let’s see if I can be clearer. The U.S. is not exempt from Canon 1251. Canon 1251 is applied, in the U.S., by Canon 1253.
but it could also be my fault for not having my P’s and Q’s in order.

I still think there is, at least, a moral obligation, but, as I have said before, the USCCB is the only one that can tell us what degree of obligation there is, moral or legal. No one else’s opinion matters, including mine.

🙂

My apologies to everyone for not being here. Frankly I did not think the post would last ,so I haven’t been checking on it. I honestly thought that what I posted was what the bishp’s conference said. Apparently I was wrong.

“Rather, let it be proved by the spirit in which we enter upon prayer and penance, not excluding fast and abstinence FREELY chosen, that these present decisions and recommendations of this conference of bishops will herald a new birth of loving faith…” Para. 28

I think what the bishops are doing is eleminating sin of those who have fallen away and are luke warm, who won’t practise this penance. I’m for that.

I think that the bishops are also trying to make this friday penance to be something done out of love which will make the act of penance more pleasing to God. I’m for that.

But I do wish the bishops would make it more clear, because most of us are very poor politicians and not very good at reading between the lines.

Thanks for everyone’s (name removed by moderator)ut.
