My friend who is a huge Alice Cooper fan just posted this on Facebook. Vince “Alice Cooper” Furnier was the son of a minister, so it’s pretty natural for him to have re-discovered Jesus when he was at his lowest point.

I know another guy who had all kinds of depression, suicidal thoughts and other problems when he was on tour as part of the opening band for a very big-name household-word band, and he likewise found Jesus and turned his life around and is not shy about telling people about it.

It’s great that we have these positive role models.

On a side note, NBC is broadcasting “Jesus Christ, Superstar” live on Easter evening, and Alice Cooper plays Herod.

I heard about that broadcast. May be the one time in 3 months I bother turning on the TV
I’m planning on watching it. I always loved the music, so I’m hoping this is good. (and if they fail us, we know where the “Off” button is!)

I saw this story and had previously thought Cooper was a Christian. But he may be Mormon. His father was a leader in a branch of the Mormon church. If he is a Mormon then he isn’t actually a Christian.

I think this is definitely a branch of the Mormon church. They accept the Book of Mormon. I think they deny the Holy Trinity which makes them non Christian. I am not an expert on this organization so I can’t say definitively. But certainly Mormons are not Christians.

Regardless of how we view it, to my knowledge Alice has never presented himself as anything but a Christian and has mentioned Jesus Christ on numerous occasions and always presented his father as a Christian minister.

Edited to add, I also note on that Wiki page for the Church of Jesus Christ under “Mission”, they are stating that “The Church of Jesus Christ will teach the Gospel to all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things commanded by Jesus Christ.”

Sounds pretty Trinitarian to me

Yes, it sounds Trinitarian but it isn’t. Obviously Mormons et al want to be considered Christian. The Catholic Church does not recognize Mormon baptisms because they are not Christian. Ecumenism is great but it has a limit. Mormonism is clearly beyond it. Pseudo Christian religions are very dangerous to the true Faith.

That said, I’m glad Cooper’s religion inspires him to live better. But I hope he converts and doesn’t lead others astray.

Alice himself is a “born-again Christian” and has been known to attend Baptist church services and Evangelical conference events.
I don’t think he’s still a member of his dad’s church and I would presume Dad has passed on by now since Alice is 70.

I also don’t think he is leading anyone astray - if anything, the complete opposite considering how most rock musicians carry on.

This is Alice’s Christian service project website:

Standard Evangelical stuff.

I’ve wanted to see this musical for a long time. I’m looking forward to it.

I cannot wait to see “Jesus Christ Superstar.” I really like that musical. It inspired me albeit it is a more modern way of looking at the life of Christ As a teen in a Catholic School, our youth group went to see it in Chicago and it was fabulous. We all loved it.

I hope to hear how everyone likes it when it airs on NBC. Definitely worth watching. Now that I am some 30 plus years older, I’ll be curious if I feel it is still as “good” in my adult way of seeing things, as when I saw it as a teen when it greatly moved me to a better understanding and deeper relationship with Christ and the persons in the Bible portrayed in the musical; Mary Madgadelne, Herod, Pilate, the Pharisees, Judas, etc.

Hope everyone enjoys it and finds it worth watching.

God Bless this Holy Week.

I love me some Alice Cooper!

I’ve never heard him refer to himself as Mormon and definitely is of the “born again” Evangelical set following his partying days. I hope to see him join the Catholic family and embrace the fullness of truth but nonetheless he’s a step in a better direction than he was before. One gift that he does have is his ability to be approachable to a wide variety of people when a lot of “born agains” tend to be viewed as insincere (fair or not.)

Alice has been “born again” for so long, and also married to the same wife for so long (and to my knowledge it’s his only marriage), that it really bolsters his credibility, on top of his genuine, down-to-earth personality.
