Lent and Solemnities?

From searching CAF, I’ve learned that we don’t need to fast during Lent on days which are solemnities. Does this include the “fast” of whatever thing(s) we gave up for lent? Also, is there a specific name for the things we abstain from?

If I say gave up jelly beans for Lent and took up praying 50 Psalms a day standing in the cold…(yes they are not real) …and then decided to change it or say choose not to do it on Sundays or on Solemnities or heck on Tuesdays. I could do so. For it is my freely chosen penance and prayer. Such is “voluntary”. It is not like I made a vow or something…

Now Giving up Meat on Fridays --well that I am obliged to do – outside say some dispensation or something --or unless it falls on a Solemnity. Such is different than what I freely take up.

So could I suspend my “giving up” of jelly beans on Solemnity? Sure.

(PS: fasting per se is the eating the one meal etc on Ash Wed and Good Friday (and any you decide in addition) …“Abstinence” is what the giving up of meat on all Fridays of Lent and Good Friday…though one can use “fasting” in a general way to mean what one gives up)
