Glad you asked, Mrs S. Happy are you poor is a fantastic book, and very very fitting for Lent. It was recommended to me by TimothyH here on CAF, with him knowing that it’d be up my wheelhouse.

I actually recommend that if we do a study group, that is the book we use.
I third this suggestion. This is something that I have always been attracted to and have never quite grasped a good way to make it play out in a secular life. Simply having fewer possesions isn’t it since I know I have been very prideful in the past about my simple lifestyle and how we weren’t running after the Joneses. But attachment to simplicity is attachment nonetheless. :o

Just purchased my copy. It’ll be here probably by the time Ash Wed. rolls around.

Perhaps St. Francis de Sales’ “Sermons for Lent” would be a good spiritual guide; I can’t think of a better one. These sermons were recorded by sisters at a convert that he was chaplain to in 1622 and not only are they amazing, but if you assist at the TLM like I do, you’ll find that the readings from Mass he expounded upon are the same ones you hear at church!

I am also struggling with doing more this Lent. I will say a prayer that yours is very fruitful. If you read this, please pray for me.

This will be my first year that i have ever done anything during lent.

The wife and I are giving up something we really love for lent. Wine!! We love our wine on the weekend!!

But, i want to do something else too. Dont know what but i want to do something spiritual and for god.

I think it’s really neat that people are starting Lenten practices that have never done it before!

It’s a great idea to give up something along with your wife, it brings you closer together and will help you stay on track.

I was thinking, maybe for the something else, you two could join up for an extra Mass together during the week? Then it would also be shared!

Remember that Sunday you get a break from your penance, but don’t make up for it in quantity, 😃

Going to the bookstore this weekend to look for the Spiritual Poverty book. I didn’t want to pay half the purchase price in shipping! Seemed to counter the spirit of the book, kwim?

Also, here’s a tidbit from St. JoseMaria Escriva to get us started on our Lenten journeys.
“Don’t create needs for yourself”
Don’t forget it: he has most who needs least. Don’t create needs for yourself. (The Way, 630)
If you want to achieve this spirit, I would advise you to be sparing with yourself while being very generous towards others. Avoid unnecessary expenditure on luxuries and comforts, whether out of caprice, or vanity, etc. Don’t create needs for yourself. In other words, learn from St Paul ‘to live in poverty and to live in abundance, to be filled and to be hungry, to live in plenty and to live in want: I can do all things in him who comforts me’. Like the Apostle, we too will come out winners in this spiritual combat if we keep our hearts unattached and free from ties. (Friends of God, 123-124)

I’m very much looking forward to Ash Wednesday. I’m hoping DH will want to go with me. I gave him a head’s up so he has time to think about it.
I just never thought of Lent and how beautiful it is until now. I’m going to feel so blessed to be a part of it. <3

Is this for you first Lent? And is this leading up to your reception of Sacraments? If so, many blessing to you during this time!!!

I won’t be received until next year but that’s okay. I’m not ready to enter the church just yet. I am however quite happy to just be and appreciate the beauty of the traditions of the Church.

Thank you anyways!

Just found out we are doing a Lenten Retreat with the Fathers of Mercy (Fr. Tom Sullivan). It’ll begin right after our TLM with Adoration & Benediction, on Feb 17th and run for 4 days.👍

I haven’t done anything for Lent in years. Its hard when you have a Scrupulosity Addiction. I’m going to try doing something this year. Some time ago my brother got me the whole Catholic Bible on Cd’s. So I’m going to try my dangedest to listen to one a day and then on Holy Week to listen to two of them. I would love to be able to say that I’ve read along with my Bible to Cd’s and say I did it with pride. Also I. Want to try pray the Rosary everyday too. Lord help me to do that for You. There are 66 Cd’s.

I received my copy of this book in the mail yesterday and I’m ready to go. How do we go about starting up a study group?

With the news about the Holy Father and the upcoming conclave, I figured I’d try to get the family to pray the rosary each night for both those intentions. Anybody else directing a little of their Lent for the Church?
