Lent....help please

I orginally posted this in the traditional catholicism forum but was informed that I might get more responses here. Thanks everyone!

Heres yet another chance for you guys to educate me about something Catholic. Can someone please explain Lent to me? I realize this prolly seems like a dumb question but in my boredom I was thinking about religion (weird thing to do for someone like me I know) and I realized that I really don’t know what Lent is all about or the history behind it. If anyone cares to explain anything including personal viewpoints and experiences I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
