Hi, I’m in RCIA- I have been having a hard time reconciling (Just re-read Romans) the idea that we are not under law any more (Jewish law) etc. How do I accept that Catholics have replaced the old law with new laws. Guidelines I can handle, recommendations for spiritual growth fine. But I am having a hard time with Catholis being “obligated”. It seems a new yoke and burden (although I haven’t run across anything unreasonable). how do I explain or defend this to my evangelical husband who (is attending mass with me but hasn’t been going to RCIA with me), that Catholics “have to follow rules and laws made by the Church that are not expressly in the Bible” especially since we are suppose to be liberated from the law. (I know that referrs to the Jewish laws, but the do’s and don’ts of the Jewish law seem to parallell the new do’s and don’ts of the Church. Sin is sin but laws concerning special days, what to eat, not to eat etc. seem very similar in a way. I need help with understanding myself and explaining to hubby. This question specically concerns eating no meat on Fridays and more general to other “obligatory laws of the Church”.
Sincerely, Deana

My :twocents: :

No one is *justified *by canon law, in the same way that men were *justified *by The Law prior to Christ.

Breaking canon law my be a sin, but it is not necessarily an intrinsic sin. Rather it is the sin of disobedience to the authority Christ left his Church to bind and loose.

deanarrca,
I am in the same situation you are in and understand completely where you are coming from. I have often wondered myself why God would say in the Bible (Acts, for example) that we should not listen to those who tell us what to eat, or about certain days if he was going to want us to do that in the future (through the Canon law). I am not trying to discredit the Canon Law (I am a Catholic myself), just trying to understand! I would appreciate anymore insight anyone has to offer.:o
