I have recently returned to the church, I was hoping to give a bit more for Lent to show my devotion to God (and to kinda reassure myself I’m truly serious about this) I started out thinking just bread, but I have decided to Fast with Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches and water, and I would then eat normal on Sunday. I routinely lift and exert a lot of energy, would be best I cut back on the lifting to focus more and keep my energy up? Is this a good idea in general? I know pb and banana sandwiches are a pretty good source of nutrients.

Limiting yourself to peanut butter and banana sandwiches for the six weeks of Lent doesn’t sound healthy. If both your pastor or spiritual director and your doctor approve that would be different.

Instead of doing something extreme, how about something smaller but attainable? Give up coffee or carbonated.drinks, something you’ll notice but won’t harm you.

I have difficulty taking the original post seriously, as I cannot imagine someone is planning to eat only bread and water, or even PB&B sandwiches and water for an entire 6 weeks except Sunday. Especially when they say they are going to lift while doing this.

If you want to do some kind of extreme fast, talk to your doctor and get a diet plan.

At present I am fairly close to this, it’s just a matter of cutting back on dinner. To be quite frank I don’t care about my physician, and I have track (throwing) so moderate lifting so my lifting in general will be cut back. Should I stick to just the traditional abstinence from flesh meat?

The thing is I don’t really drink or eat many unhealthy things. Sodas I don’t, coffee nope, sweets maybe but I feel like this just kinda taking the easy path.

There’s a rule on CAF that we’re not supposed to give advice that falls in a category of “medical”. That’s why you see so many posts telling someone to see their doctor.

It’s difficult for us to advise on what you should eat for a fasting program because it could have medical effects.

Therefore, my advice would be if you’re generally in good health, stick to the traditional abstinence/ fasting rules of the Church as they’re broad enough that most people can meet them without becoming ill.
If you want to do something more extreme, talk to your doctor about it first.

It’s really aa question of doing something moderate or extreme. Cutting back a bit isn’t a problem. Going overboard isn’t healthy either physically or spiritually.

It is possible to be strict but also arbitrary. I had a lot of Lent possibilities swirling in my head that Father Mike helped me see were arbitrary.
