What are these dietary rules for lent. I have diabetes but the way I understand it on Fridays your not supposed to eat any meat but fish but there are people that are exceptions. Also is there a connection in Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday?

If you live in the US, The USCCB has some great resources that can answer lots of questions about the “rules”. One always needs to remember that these are general guidelines and one should always speak to one’s own priest if there are special circumstances.

AS to Mardi Gras, yes there is a “connection”.

Mardi Gras literally means “Fat Tuesday” and is a reference to that last day of fatty, rich food before the penitental season of Lent begins. In the US, New Orleans in particular- Mardi Gras has become a 2-3 week celebration with parades, floats, masquerade balls, parties and all sorts of excesses that ends on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday

I would talk it over with your Priest. He would probably give you something called a dispensation, so you won’t have to fast or abstain due to your medical condition. Mardi Gras also called Fat Tuesday, is the day before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent. I hope this helps. God bless you.
