I watch a local TV station in the philippines and the guest was a filipino missionary priest and being interviewed regarding the Lenten Season and the traditions.

The correspondent ask him if is it really a tradition or just a superstition that eating of meat during friday of lent is not allowed. He replied that it is a traditon of the church. a question is asked if it is ok for us to eat meat or not. He said well’ it has been a tradition before but today it is all right to eat meat on fridays of lent.

My ear rung with so much heat hearing this. A priest is saying and informing people on a national TV that it is ok now to eat meat on fridays of lent.

Asked about his view on the da vinci code on mariage of Jesus to magdalene; he said i just hope so (that jesus was married) so that they can prove that Jesus was truly a man.

Abstinence from meat on Fridays is not merely a tradition, a tradition that dates back to apostolic times, as evident from chapter 8 of the Didache, but it is also currently Church law, with exception.

According to Canon Law:Canon 1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

So, the matter of abstinence from meat on Fridays in general and on the Fridays of Lent in particular is be determined by your Episcopal Conference. I don’t know about the Philippines but in the United States the bishops have deternined that abstinance from meat is still required on the Fridays of Lent but it is only encouraged on the Fridays outside of Lent.
