Since islam seems to be a repudiation of Jesus being God-Incarnate, among other things, do you think that there would be islam, without there first being Christianity?

Lucky for us, there is Christianity.

These hypothetical (thanks, Mr. Lennon) are not something I find very meaningful.

But I’ll answer the thread questions:

If Christianity did not exist, we would not exist either. So, I guess my answer is nothing. Less than nothing. Whatever Hawking thinks existed before the Big Bang created itself from nothing, that’s what I’d be. No religion, too.

Think of it like asking if Christianity didn’t exist but somehow everyone else posting here still managed to be born. What would be the dominant religion of your place of birth? The thread has mostly explored this line of possibility.

Besides, haven’t you ever wondered what non-Christian or non-Abrahamic faith your ancestors believed in? If not, I think it’s still an interesting question to ask (at least from an anthropological or folkloric perspective).

I certainly would not embrace Judaism, and I could not embrace Islam because without Judaism and Christianity both, whatever substituted for Islam would be shallow.

I suppose Zoroastrianism would be for me the closest religion to Christianity in a non-Christ world. I would be able to worship a One Great God, and revere a founding Prophet Law-Giver. I could contemplate angels, including guardian angels. I would look forward to the coming “Messiah” - “He shall be the victorious Benefactor by name and World-renewer by name. He will be Benefactor because he will benefit the entire physical world; he will be World-renewer because he will establish the eternal physical life. He will oppose evil and defend the faithful.” With a little luck, he might turn out to be Christ.

The hymns and rites would probably inspire and comfort me more than other religions’ rites do. There would be a real devil, a super-devil, Ahriman, and demons, not that I would particularly miss them if they did not exist. The somewhat “unpleasant” account of the races would be a little difficult for me. I would focus on good thoughts, good words, and good deeds; and I would read the scriptures often.

So i choose to explore another thread of possibility. That if there was no Christianity, then there would have been no Christ. If no Christ, then, nothing.

Sorry to poo-poo on the fun times here, but, why should we care what might be if what is never was? I don’t.

Actually, this has alot of good discernment to it. The question (without sounding too harsh) has a bent focus on ‘religion’ which does nothing for us.

Trust me when I say, I get frustrated when anti Catholics bash the term religion of all goodness. But there is truth in the fact that religion has a very potential for man based efforts to please God.

The best answer to the question, I can think of, is to do what God reveals to us. The prophets of old were the voice of God to the people of Abraham. Without belief in his God and sacrifices made for sins, there is no good in religion. But the debate as to those who were not given the Law and their potential adaption into Abraham yet follow the natural law written in their hearts is very relavent. So I stand by the statement to find the grace of God in its distance of pre-Christ anyway possible.

Hard to say. The evidence for the resurrection of Christ is what brought me towards spirituality in the first place. So were it not for that, I would probably be agnostic with some leanings towards some new age spirituality. shudders

Yours is not a possibility. It sounds more like a xenophobic insult towards anything that’s non-Abrahamic while at the same time demonstrating a bullish contempt for ancient history and mythology.

If what you say is true, Catholic universities like mine wouldn’t have a need to teach courses on Norse, Egyptian, as well as the pre-colonial pagan lore of our indigenous peoples.

But absence of Christianity =/= absence of God. So I think the question is a reasonable one.

My answer would be: Buddhism. Combined either with some kind of basic “Noachide” monotheism or with some sort of paganism, most likely, depending on how convincing the OT condemnations of idolatry still appeared in the absence of Christianity (a hard thing to estimate).

You are correct for without Christianity humanity would still be ‘below’ .

Jesus came at the beginning of the Piscean Age when there were approximately 250 millions on the earth .There are now over 7 billion souls on this planet, all brought up from ‘hell’ by our Saviour . We are now ending this Age although a date precise is not something we can know ,we can see the ‘signs’ .
