So Advent is coming in December. Tell a new Catholic all about it. Why do we celebrate it? What should I do during Advent and is it the next “thing” in the Church’s year? Tell me whatever comes to mind.

Don’t jump the gun. Live in the present we still have the Feast of St Francis to come 10/4 and All Saints 11/1 and All Souls 11/2.

Actually, “Don’t jump the gun and start celebrating Christmas,” is a big part of celebrating Advent.

By no means do I intend this to be a complete definitive explanation of Advent, but Advent is kind of a time to “relive” the time prior to the birth of Christ. We recall the totality of the history and the prophecies that led up to and predicted the coming of Christ.

I think that it is admirable that you want to be prepared. Perhaps like St. John you are a voice crying in the wilderness! Actually I have been in preparation myself in thinking about and praying about my intentions for The Christmas Novena. It is an old Catholic Advent devotion that is also known as the St. Andrew Novena because you start it on the feast of St. Andrew on November 30th. You recite the prayer 15 times a day until Christmas while reflecting on the Incarnation, the birth of Jesus and the Holy Family. It was passed down to me through my family and I try to keep this powerful devotion alive by purchasing packs of the prayer card to pass out at Mass starting in the fall. I replenished my cards in January but with COVID I’ll be unable to attend Mass in person. My daughter and daughter in law said that they can give out the cards in their parishes. Below is the back of the novena prayer card for you. The front always has a Nativity scene in it. You can get them from many Catholic supply companies either just one or a few laminated or unlaminated in a box of 100. I get mine from Leaflet Missal. If I am praying for someone, I don’t tell them until after Christmas and usually send a prayer card when I do. Since I say the prayer 15 times for each intention (my own choice), I have to limit my intentions to just four to stay faithful to its recitation. I hope that you will consider adopting this Advent devotion as your own. 🙏
