Let's talk about today's readings 1/10/09

What are the sins leading to death? Are they the 7 deadly sins,
the Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit? Both, or is there another?
It’s hard to imagine someone having a sin so that you’re not
advised to pray for them.

I had to laugh when part of the psalm said: Let them sing for
joy upon their couches! Let the couch potatoes unite!

In the gospel, I wondered how close the 2 places were, where
John and Jesus were both baptising at the same time? Was
baptising a regular part of the ministry of Jesus or did He just
start out doing it for a certain length of time? If so, how long?
And why didn’t He stay with John the Baptist and they could
baptise together? Why didn’t the disciples of John and Jesus
unite? After John testified to Jesus, why didn’t he himself join
Jesus as a disciple? Do you think Jesus would have told him
“no”?

I don’t believe John is talking about venial vs mortal sins here. With the sacrament of confession, or a perfect contrition, mortal sins will be absolved. And why wouldn’t you pray for a brother you may witness performing a mortal sin?

God wants to forgive our sins, He wants to draw us to him. But there are two sins that cannot be forgiven. One is to die in mortal sin. But I don’t think this is what John is referring to either.

The other sin that God cannot forgive is apostasy of the faith:

Heb 10:26-27 For if we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire which will consume the adversaries.

2Pe 2:21 For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.

I believe this is the deadly, or mortal, sin John is referring to.

I’ve read Jesus did not baptize. But he ordered his Apostles to.
