Hello everyone,

At the risk of sounding dumb, I have a question regarding these two books. In my schola we all use the Liber but recently I picked up an old copy (printed 1871) of the Graduale Romanum. The book is so old I’m afraid to use it but I did look at the propers for this coming 1st Week in Advent. They are different. But my understanding is that the Graduale and the Liber are supposed to be the same. Are they? And if the Graduales were already being published why the need for the Liber in the first place?

Also, on a side note what is the difference between the modern Graduale and the Gregorian Missal put out by Paraclete Press?

Could you provide the propers given (just the incipits)?

Also, which Graduale are you referring to? (thoguh I think for Sunday I of Advent they are same)

Thanks for your reply.

I’m not sure what you mean by which Graduale, but here is the text of the inside cover:

GRADUALE
DE TEMPORE ET DE SANCTIS

Juxta Ritum
Sacrosanctae Romanae Ecclesiae

Cum Cantu

Paul V. Pont. Max. Jussu Reformato
Cui Addita sun officia postea adprobata

Sub Auspiciis Sanctissimi Domini Nostri

PII PP. IX
Cum Privilegio

Ratisbonae, neo eboraci et Cincinnatii

sumptibus, chartis et typis friderici pustet
s.sedis apost. et sacr. rit. congr. typographii

MDCCCLXXI

The incipit for the first Advent Introit (1871) is:

so fa so la la so so so do la so la fa so so la so fa
(Ad te levavi, animam meam)

But the 1961 Graduale has:
so re fa so la la so…
Ad te levavi…

Did the propers change for Advent between 1871 and 1961?

😃 I thought you meant the text of the Propers. I’m hopeless at music though I have seen what you are describing in a late 19th century Graduale (Pustet) which has the neumes in a slightly different style- so evidently it wasn’t restricted to the LU. Why don’t you ask here?

That appears to be the case throughout, yes. Also, the Gloria Patri tones are different as well, slightly.
