Life after death?

What is our church’s position on what happens after death? Specifically, are the dead…dead…and know nothing? Or are we wrong to believe that the dead can “visit” us?
Here’s the problem…my father died 2 years ago and I have been “visited” by him several times. My partner is SDA and says "the dead are dead.Period. And they “know nothing”
I don’t believe in the occult, nor do I conjure up spirits. But I truly believe our loved ones “visit” us ( for lack of a better word).I also like to believe that our loved ones who have died look out for us.
Can anyone tell me “the OFFICIAL position” of our faith?

That sounds like ghosts, and I don’t think the Church has a position on those. I’ve heard in rare cases of Saints visiting people, so it might be possible. Also, after Jesus’ ressurection he tells the disciples that he is not a ghost, so that makes it sound like the disciples believe it and its possible.

Do you have a copy of the Catechism? It would be beneficial for you to read, because it is so lengthy and detailed about the subject. I can tell you that if a person dies in a state of Grace, he is more alive than us the “living”…and the communion of saints also allows us accsess…As far as Ghosts are concerned I don’t think there is an official teaching, and it’s kinda like the U.F.O. thing…if its proven to be true…then it’s true and there will be a council to reckon with the phenomena.

What is my personal opinion?? I suppose that being as we have free will we would continue to exercise that right up until the end and beyond. The scenario in my mind…a person dies and his soul hovers above His body and then is called to the light, I suppose he could choose not to go at that moment…But…I have an active imagination!!!

Many people who die are not even aware that there really is an afterlife and so when their spirit leaves their body they are more bewildered then ever. So they wander aimlessly and they usually hang around places they were familiar with in their former life. Your father needs to be guided to the white light, which when he enters he will pass from this world to the next. If you see him again, tell him this, “Dad go towards the light”. Otherwise your father will continue to wander aimlessly, until he stumbles unto the white light portal.

I heard one explination that souls that are ghosts are souls that want people to pray for them to get them out of Purgatory. Next time you meet him, if he doesn’t tell you what he wants, make the Sign of the Cross and tell him you’ll pray for his soul.

There is indeed a portal that connects our physical dimension to the spiritual dimension. It is entered through the light which leads us to it. Some of our early saints depicted it in art as a long tunnel, where we pass to the next place. Right off, I forgot the famous painting that was done and hung in a Catholic monastery for centuries. In modern times, people who were pronounced clinically dead and came back to their bodies told of how they passed through the light, through the tunnel and spoke with their loved ones, once they passed through the tunnel. That is all I can tell you on the matter.
